Set Modification: Benny's Spaceship Spaceship! SPACESHIP! SPACESHIP! (or the Spaceship!X4) . A modification to the amazing set Benny's Spaceship! Spaceship! SPACESHIP! . I call this "Benny's Spaceship! Spaceship! SPACESHIP! SPACESHIP! See, adding another iteration of the word "Spaceship!" means it's the next version up - rather than calling it the v2 or MkII or something. For brevity, let's call it the Spaceship!X4
Like many, I love this set. It's fun. It's sleek. It's a neo-retro-throwback re-imagining of a cherished theme, sure to encourage thirty-plus geeks like myself to part with their money. BUT, much as I loved the set, it seemed unfinished to me, and other things that were just plain wrong.
Now, I love the Classic Space ethos as much as anyone - exploration, industry, science, progress, no weapons! But, considering that this set came out of the box almost as heavily-armed as a Galaxy Squad set, yeah, I militarized it even more.
These next 4 pictures are not mine. I wasn't smart enough to snap pictures of the unaltered model before I set to tinkering with it. So, to highlight what I wanted to improve about the original set, I'm borrowing a few pics from Huw's review of the set over on Brickset. Thanks, Huw. I hope you don't mind.
Also, Huw, thanks for taking such lovely pictures. Perhaps I should try using something better than 2 white posterboards for a backdrop. So there you have it folks - if the pics are pretty, I'm not claiming them as my own.
Problem: it lands on its belly. Ever see a duck sitting on its nest? QUACK!
Problem: The underbelly - unfinished, ugly, open construction.
Problem: Cockpit - room for three, but only useful controls for 1. If you ain't doin' nuthin', get outta my cockpit!
Problem: Astro-kitty's cradle-saddle-position-thingy. What's she doing up there? Is her only job to fire the missiles? Lame. Plus, her saddle hangs down into engineering, making it impossible for figures to sit in there with the hatch shut. So... you only want to work on your reactor while the compartment's open to space? weird choice.
LET'S GET FIXED!
Erm, well, not exactly what I meant to say.
Benny hired on a couple of Marines to man the fighters. I added clips to stow their weapons. Also added ball joints so that, while connected to the X4, the fighters could function as turrets.
I gave Astro Kitto something to do. Namely - operate a massive fusion cannon.
Removed 1 chair and installed some more intricate controls - Wildstyle's in the pilot's seat, while Benny's the gunner. I struggled for a while with that choice - Which post would Benny rather have?
I also opened a passageway behind the pilot's seat, leading into Engineering.
With Kitty's saddle-thingy out of the way, there was room to hire on a full crew! Also added a little more detail to the workstations and installed some CS cargo boxes - a pure must-have.
A few shots of how the landing gear stows and deploys. No longer will the Spaceship!X4 wallow on it's belly like a sitting duck! Quack no more!
Yeah, there's steering wheels on the landing gear. Why? I dunno. Seems like something a Classic Space engineer would have done.
To demonstrate that my alterations didn't detract (much) from the overall sleek swooshability of the craft (except maybe for the tank cannon on top), I arranged a few in-flight pix for your swooshing-viewing pleasure.
What? Three glasses of wine increases anyone's swooshability.
Underside - Greebles Ahoy!
My favorite changes to this model are on the underside, which was just sooooo bare and open before. I added anti-grav-repulsor-field-whatchamajiggers, other important greebley-bits and, most importantly of all, a cozy belly turret for Emmet. Cuz nothing makes a clueless fish-outta-water archetype feel more safe than hanging upside down from a speeding spaceship while being shot at. Right?
Thanks for Reading!
