Here is a road train I built. Road trains are massive tractor-trucks that pull four or even five trailers at a time. They generally operate on dust trails or highways, and are most commonly found in Australia, northern Canada, and parts of the United States. To see a real road train, see pic. 21. Mine has a cabin with a sleeper, and three identical open-bed trailers, totaling 26 wheels. These trailers appear to be carrying veggies of some kind. When all trailers are linked to the tractor, the total length is 22.5 inches. The road train features visibility lights, a hood ornament, an air filter, bumper bars on the front, an "oversize load" banner, opening doors, side view mirrors, twin smokestacks, a windbreaker (in case it is carrying box-trailers), a huge front grill, a bed on the inside, and double-jointed hinges for maximum maneuverability. The LEGOŪ stickers are from set 10156 Lego Truck, and the "special transport" sticker on the windbreaker is from 7249 Mobile Crane. Please review, and thanks for looking!
About this creation
Side view of the whole thing. It is 22.5 inches long.
Road train parked in a U-shape.
Cabin front angle.
Side view. My favorite part is how there are two wheels under the front fender.
Back angle. Notice the twin smokestacks.
The "oversize load" banner that I printed out from the web.
Shot of hood detail. Notice the huge front grill and the ornament.
Shot of the air filter and the Side view mirror, which has a directional light on it.
The windbreaker with the "special transport" sticker from set 7249 Mobile Crane left on it.
Shall we have a look inside (through our opening doors)?
Here is where the driver operates the truck.
The sleeper, for these missions last days on end.
A book is included in case the driver needs to read himself to sleep (even though he probably will as soon as his head touches the pillow).
Now, one of the trailers.
Back angle. Notice the good visibility lights and tail lights.
Top view only to reveal veggies.
The three identical trailers.
Here the custom hinge I used to connect everything and still provide optimum steering...
... This is because they are double-jointed.
A real road train. *jaw drops* Yes, very big.

Dude! Not bad! I love it. And that trailer hitch - some simple! I would never had thought of it. Are you sure, though, that these tractor trailers have two wheels in front? But, anyway, I just adore it. I like the exhausts on the grille (a bit unusual...?) and the wind shield on the roof is great. I really smiled at the Australian worker reading himself to sleep :D I always read half a book before going to sleep in bed. The grille is really super, and I thought that addition of the veggies (urgh) was pretty funny. Keep it up, and don't stop till you've worn your legos off! I will probably be posting a rat rod for the ~Rod Club~ soon. Probably tomorrow. It's 10 studs wide, and 18 studs long. Keep it up, and please don't forget to comment on my little Rat Rod! Don't stop building in this great vintage way with a little stab of newness - I love it - so please keep on buildin'! Raphy :)
Some really heavy road trains actually do have 4 wheels in the front. And on the bumper: those aren't smokestacks, the just, well bumpers. The smokestacks are on the back of the cabin. |

not very aussie looking but still good. We use b-double and b-triple combinations. Id definately scrap the trailers that are on there if you want an authentic look and use box, container or bulk haulage trailers. Check my email for some of my truck pics. lowy |

Hey, another road trainer builder here - there arenīt as many of us... Looks good and the yellow is a definite eye-catcher. I think the prime mover could be smoothed out a bit more. The semi just seems a bit stubby - if you lengthen it a bit it would already be tons better. I also noticed that you didnīt hook up the trailers in the typically "Australian way", but with drawbar trailers. I did the same when I built my "Australian Road Train", though... Would you like to check it out? Best regards, Steffen |
