Give it up for Red Carney -- Chapter 3
Today's part is early! Yaaaay!
About this creation

It was 7:00 AM sharp. Red grabbed the rope to open the garage door, humming to himself. As the morning sun inched into the hangar, Red grinned to himself. So far, his first day on the job was going well.

The job market for certified Nexus Force starship technicians was a competitive one, but then so was Cam Dent.

Cam Dent, Red’s latest character, was a go-getter. He never gave up, and he was very well-qualified. Of course, a background check wasn’t necessary because Cam had brought a fake recommendation from the recruiter’s brother. Cam Dent had a lot of friends in high places.

“You’re the new guy eh?” an older minifigure who had been watching Red open the garage door suddenly spoke up.

“Yup, Cam Dent.” Red introduced himself with a warm handshake.

Red could tell by the unimpressed look in the senior mechanic’s eye that it would take months to earn his respect. But that was alright — he just needed to inspire enough trust to get behind the controls of a functioning starship for a few minutes. Hopefully he could keep the illusion of being a trained mechanic going long enough.

Red glanced around at the starships in the hangar. There were a lot of older models, and most were pretty banged up from the fighting Red guessed they’d just returned from. Red had been hoping to find a newer, faster model with better defenses, but it didn’t look like that was in the cards today.

As the day wore on, Red was finding he knew less than he thought he did about starship maintenance. The models he had worked on with his dad were vastly different than these battleships. In spite of himself, Red was starting to get nervous that he’d be found out — or at the very least that someone would check his fake Nexus credentials.

It was around 10:00 when Red caught a glance of the distinctive uniform of a Nexus security officer through the boss’s window.

It had been a setup all along, Red realized, gritting his teeth. Only one thing for it now.

Red had been eyeing one ship in particular. It was a run-of-the-mill, but tough and reliable Aibus model that was still in pretty good condition. Red sauntered over towards it.

“Hey kid, where are you going?” the voice of the mechanic he’d met that morning rang out behind him.

Red broke into a run. All or nothing now.

He catapulted himself into the ship, and quickly slammed the door behind him. Thankfully, it had a lock. Red sprinted to the cockpit, hoping that the ship had fuel. Or that it even ran.

He didn’t know what the ship was in here for, but hopefully it was just routine maintenance.

Shouting voices and banging on the door focused his thoughts to a fine edge as Red tried to remember the procedure for starting a warship.

Easy. Fuel on, ignition on, starter..

The engines coughed, but nothing else happened. But Red noticed the mechanics running away from the ship, which gave him all the confidence he needed to try again. Red punched the starter, and this time the engines reluctantly came to life, lighting up the garage and filling the cockpit with an unsteady roar.

Huh. It worked.

Quoting Nico Bak318 A wonderful next part! There's just one question I need to ask: What's in the background of the pic? How did you take that? I don't think you have a garage or so that is really that small in your house bt it looks that way..... Great work!
I'm so glad you enjoyed! The picture was rendered in Blender. The walls were made with some textures I found online. I wish it was real though, I would love to have these ships in real brick!

Quoting Sombreroman ~ Great new chapter! I see a Mk1 Bulldog and a more current Bulldog, but I don't recognize that ship on the far left. Is that a new ship?
Good eye there :p It is new. It's an Aibus Streamliner, a collab with Qmtfive. I posted a creation on Brick Lab about it, which I may or may not repost here.

Quoting Philip Pip9766 Great writing! And nice work on the picture. Its kind of weird to see plain Bulldogs though...
Thanks! I got an early start on both, which is uncharacteristically responsible of me :P They do look a little weird.. I try to give each one a name though. These are the Dart and the Lark, front to back.

Thank you! :D It might or might not be depending on if you follow me on twitter :p The ship doesn't have a place in the canon yet, but I want to give it one.

Quoting Dat SpicyPorg A very Han Solo-ish part! By the way, are you excited for Solo?
I suppose Red is a bit like Han :P At first I wasn't sure it was gonna be good, but I saw some more stuff about it and now I'm kind of really excited :P
