A scale model of a Hamilton class US Coast Guard cutter (classified by the USCG as a "378 ft. High Endurance Cutter") with an embarked MH-60 Jayhawk. The model features the 1980s-era FRAM upgrades, which include the replacement of the original 5 inch gun with a 76 mm Oto-Melara cannon and the addition of a Phalanx CIWS and a telescoping helicopter hangar. The scale used is approximately 5 ft. per stud, or about 1:200 (actually 1:190).
A total of 12 Hamilton class cutters were built during the late 1960s and early 1970s. All 12 are still in service, although only 4 are still with the US Coast Guard (the other 8 have been decommissioned and sold to foreign navies or coast guards). The remaining 4 are due to be decommissioned within the next year or so and replaced with Legend class cutters. While the new Legend class ships are significantly more capable, it's a shame to see these older ships go, since they were among the most beautifully designed ships the USCG has ever deployed.
Interesting trivia note: two Hamilton class cutters, the Hamilton and the Sherman, were responsible for the biggest drug bust ever, when they interecepted a Panamanian fishing boat carrying 20 tons of cocaine in 2007.
Given the scale, there are some inaccuracies in the shape and location of certain features. The markings on the flight deck, for example, are nowhere close to those on the real cutters. I did my best, though, to make sure that the important details were represented as accurately as possible.

beautiful play, especially the OTO-Melara cannon is immediately recognizable and the jayhawk too. Good job!
Thanks. The Jayhawk is one of my favorite parts of the build as well. The Hamiltons were actually one of the few USCG cutters with a flight deck big enough for the Jayhawk. Most were/are capable of handling only the smaller MH-65 Dolphin.

Excellent work, Mark! Welcome to MOCpages!
Thanks. I had been considering setting up an account here for a while, but when the site apparently went down for about a week a little while ago, I was having my doubts about whether it would ever come back.
