LCBTC 2017 R3: King Sven’s Planetarium

King Sven is a learned monarch, he leaves brutish warfare to his capable generals and instead spends his time trying to discern the secrets of the universe. As a birthday gift, his chief engineer/astronomer built him a magnificent hall with a complex mechanism depicting the paths of the many moons around their planet – calling it an orrery.
About this creation
Built for Round 3 of the 2017 Lego Castle Building Techniques Contest (LCBTC). Please head on over there and take a look at the many brilliant creations by my fellow competitors!

I chose the “Castle with a Function” category:
“Functional castle builds are rare, and for good reason - they tend to be challenging. Build a medieval castle that includes a function. Ideas include collapsing walls, working catapults, a working gatehouse and drawbridge, and so on. The more creative and functional, the better! The requirements are that you build at least some part of a castle, and of course add some awesome functions! Be sure to include a video of the functions in action!”

Now for a tour of my creation… which got a LOT bigger than I originally figured :)
See the video of the contraption in action on my flickr account!

An overview of the exterior of the palace. Finally I got to build big stained glass windows!!

The interior, don’t worry the castle denizens don’t know that these were originally Lego chess board tiles! Minus the jumper plates of course.

The Orrery. Realistically this was meant to be the prototype to prove the three shaft method of enabling counter rotating bodies on the same axis. The main hall took so long that I barely had time to get the Orrery working, but I’m very happy it works splendidly!

The business end of the orrery. What a weird word!

A VERY happy King Sven, his wife, daughter, and son. Hanging out on the special viewing balcony!

An overview of the interior with the orrery in the shot.

Artsy focus and all that.

An owl seems to have moved in.

One of Sven’s bodyguards.

The ladies of the court.

The men of the court… note that King Sven’s court is a bit backwards… the ladies and men stand apart. Well... at least he's a fan of science!

The genius chief engineer/architect/astronomer!

A long view of the hall.

Another long view!

The lower floor of the palace is where the orrery is accessed and maintained. I originally was going to have oxen “powering” the orrery, which would have aligned with this floor. Definitely ran out of time for that!

The exterior from a funky angle.

The gate house tower.

Decorative things and stuff.

More decorations!

The trusty gate guard and his faithful husky companion.

Timmy the goat herder is back!! He made his way all the way from Middle Earth from my MELO 2015 Round 1 build! And he got taller!

The edifice from below.

And… from above!

The stained glass windows.

The flying buttresses! One of my happy moments of architectural design.

Da roof.

The inside again…

A pillar being all tall and fancy.

And that’s it!!

I'll end with a few WIP shots to close it out as usual (note how I sadly had to strip my poor Ferrari of all its red tiles):

****

This was a tough build to finish in the time given. I definitely bit off a lot to chew… and I’m sad I didn’t get the orrery as polished as I wanted or the oxen “running” it. But… I’m really pumped the thing works haha, took a lot of tinkering - which was the first thing I did before I committed to the build. Once I knew I had a concept that worked I started in on the hall with gusto and worked like crazy until the last minute! Good luck to the other competitors, and thanks to Classical Bricks for putting on such a great contest!

Quoting Henrik Jensen Wow! This is an amazing building! It`s actually more like a cathedral, with the tall leaded windows an the flying buttresses! But it`s a fantastic place for a planetarium too. Excellent in all it`s fantastic details!
Thanks Henrik, you know I was thinking the same thing when I saw the tall thin elements coming together! You might not be surprised that I had an image of the flying buttresses of Notre Dame up on my PC as I worked. Along with many other great inspirations like the the orrery from the Dark Crystal, and lego builds by awesome builders like Isaac Snyder.

Quoting TMNS 5097 Wow. This is amazing! I don't know where to start, the roof is amazing! I like the grass, but sometimes green is a little vibrant for castle builds, olive green usually tones it down a bit, but that's just my opinion. The tile floors are great as well! I also like the subtle brick wall at the bottom of the castle, it really adds a lot of depth to the MOC. You also have NPU in this MOC. (as you usually do) And as usual, the overall size of your creations are just stunning! Keep it up and good luck!
