MELO 2017 Round 3: Oliver Becker vs. Mountain Hobbit
Orthanc Bracket - The Barrow Downs, I tried to catch the scene when Frodo and his friends were raided by the Barrow Whights.
About this creation
I've uploaded some supplementary pics I hadn't the time to do because I was very late with my entrance in round 3 here...

I'd integrated a 2 lights in the cave to give the MOC a more creepy atmosphere... ;)

My opponent ! Good luck to him!

Quoting Ben Cossy Looks great! The posing on the figs perfectly fits their expressions and the lite up shot at the end of the post looks great. Nice job.
Thank you very much, Ben! The last pic was hard to get, 'cause I'm no great photographer... ;)

Quoting Builder Allan Awesome! Very well built scene. I too like the entrance, that oblong top stone looks great :-)
Thanks much, Alan! Although I haven't finished this in all details it seems to be a compact and "working" MOC... ;)

Quoting Jeremy McCreary Don't know this story but love the scenery!
Maybe you should try Tolkien, it's like a fairytale for adults, a sparkish fantasy, the old story: good against bad, but with very much interesting stuff "between the lines"... ;) Thanks my friend!

Quoting Nico Bak318 A very, very good looking MOC! I could name all the parts i like like the light, rocks and the cave but the scene itself is so well organized. I wish you the best in the contest.
Hey Nico, so kind! Thank you so much, my friend!

Thanks much, Nick! Glad you like it too!

Quoting The Grey Man The barrow entrance looks excellent, very sinister and aged.
Thanks GM! So it fullfills it's purpose as an eyecatcher well, I believe... :) The rest should have been outworked in the same accuracy, but my bad back thwarted my plans... ;)

Quoting Elio Salsano Hi there, I love the cave-entrance. Good luck in round 4. Greetz, Elio
Thanks so much, Elio! But it's a barrow, not a cave... ;)

Quoting Carter Witzenburg Nice build! I'm not a huge fan of the largest rock (but I really like the others). The angled ones are my favorite. It looks like it will be you and me facing each other in the next round. I can't wait to see the category!
Thank you very much, Carter! The biggest menhir is a deep bow to Goscinny and Uderzo, the fathers of Asterix. This menhir is a cameo of Obelix beloved rockwork... ;) So wait for the category, it will be a great fun, I believe and you're a fine oponent(seldom word...)then, as it seems to me now! :)

Quoting Doug Hughes Great build Oliver!! I love the rocks especially!
Thank you very much, Doug! I'm happy to have reached the contest- entrance here at last minute with a functional, but not totally completed MOC... ;)

Quoting Michael Kringe Wow, this was a really close call! I love the rockwork and the entrance to the barrow looks better than your opponent's in my opinion. However, I feel that compared to your R1 and 2 entries this is not your strongest build. The green ground could look more roundish and organic as well as it could have needed some more detail, as well as the path to the barrow. I hope you're not angry that your opponent won my vote for this round. Still an excellent building quality though, definitely worthy for a R3 MELO entry! Good luck with the 3rd judge!
Thanks Michael! I agree, it would have been better if I didn't got ill with a hard back- pain... ;) That's the truth, so I could finish this MOC just in time as an incomplete one...! I'm happy my oponent has gotten your vote, he'd made a strong entrance with good ideas! :)

Quoting City Creator As aforementioned, the creepy "feel" of this build won me your vote. Good luck in Round 4!
Thanks CC! This atmosphere was intended to reach here, so I'm happy most people mentioned this... ;) The rest I'd told before BN in my answer!

Quoting Sven ;o) A very nicely done scenery with nice details. Great work my friend! But the shape of the bigger rock is reminding me on Obelix's menhir ;) Was this done on purpose? XD
Thanks too, my friend and sharp mind of yours! The big menhir IS a reminescence to Goscinny and Underzo's stories and Obelix's favorite toy. I can't resist because the menhirs of Carnac are a famous relict in the southern part of the Bretagne/France. So it was a little(?) gimmick, maybe a cameo here... LOL ;)

Quoting Clayton Marchetti Outstanding build! I love the spooked horse rearing up. It knows something bads coming. I love the rock work around the cave entrance. Brilliant work!
Thanks my friend, I'm happy you've fun here! ;)

Quoting Brick Ninja This was a really hard one. I was sad to see the Barrow Downs cut from the movies. I love the feel of this build, it has the slightly creepy atmosphere from the book. The landscape is a little blah in sections, but overall a very good build. It was a tough call, but in the end you get my vote.
Thanks BN! I agree with the texturing of the landscape. The barrow and the menhirs are like I wanted to do them, then I got a bad pain in the back and had to take hard pills to get it just a little better, so my last work with this was a struggle, some workin' in my job was also necessary and time was tied... ;) The hills would have been higher and the details around would have been better, I believe. But the result now to get some perspective shots are also like I'd planed them... ;)
