I Dreamt of Rust - Prologue
O, little dreamer, why do you linger? For what do you hunger? Would it not be better to wander?
About this creation

"There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream,

"The earth, and every common sight,

"To me did seem,

"Apparelled,

"In celestial light."

- William Wordsworth

"There was a time when the morning dew would embroider these flowers, like a prismatic sea of pearls," Thornley thought.
Thornley gazed at the gently curling petals of the flower he had just cut. His hand, almost of its own accord, set down his shears.

He hopped gingerly towards his fireplace. One misstep, and the books under his feet would descend over the floor in a flurry of white paper.

Mornings like this rarely came anymore for Thornley. Mornings where he could tend to his garden, and admire his work by the crackling flames. His landlord, four floors down, usually came to complain about the hardly tolerable indoor garden right around now. But, much to Thornley's relief, it seemed his landlord was skipping today. After a beautiful half-eternity, Thornley set down the flower. Sighing, he re-entered the reality of his schedule.

He picked up his breakfast as he made his way back. He had left it there yesterday, on purpose.
"Thank you, yesterday's Thornley," he said to himself, smiling.

Cloudy beams billowed through the barred skylight, scattering over Thornley's back and the metal attached to his left arm. Mornings like this really did rarely come.

Finished with breakfast, Thornley seated himself at his desk, dipping his pen in ink. Just a little practice before he went to the office.

He drew a topic out of his mental jar at random.
Nature.
Thornley's face lit up with gratitude. Here was something he couldn't write enough about.
He brushed his pen across his chin, thinking. Then, he set his pen upon his paper.

There was a time when the morning dew would embroider the flowers, like a prismatic sea of pearls. The dew stopped coming a long time ago. Our engines and machines scared it away. The dew came for the little stems of grass, sprouting from the soil all alone. It didn't come for our hulks of rust and decay.

The smoldering clouds parted a little today, let the sun speak through the windows a little. But just a little. It's a miracle any of my plants are alive. Even under a skylight.

One day our rust will give up, and our creations will boil and rot beneath the revenge of the sun. Then the little grasses will come back, to reclaim their share, and the dew will roll back with them.

One day.

"Today, we begin a new era for Olympia!" Asbestos Jones exclaimed.
His party had finally won the megacity's general election. Which, of course, changed him from Mr. Asbestos Jones, to Mayor Asbestos Jones.
He paused. Scattered applause.

The new mayor's thoughts faltered at the silence. His triumphant smile, however, remained steady.
"What do we love about Olympia? Our inventions? Our magnificent flying machines? Our superiority over every other city on the planet? Whatever it is you love, I will increase a hundred times as your new mayor. What do we hate? The filth that still plagues some of our streets? The rust and despondence the Lower Quarter has descended into?"
He paused again. The crowd had regained some of its interest. Next was the line that had sent him to the top in the election.
"What do we hate?" he demanded.
His voice rose steadily.
"Being left behind?"
The crowd murmured its approval. Nobody was very vocal. Asbestos Jones understood that. Nobody wanted to admit that they hated being left behind, because that meant they were left behind. And that meant they were failures. And that meant they had failed Olympia.

"I promise," the mayor continued, "I promise nobody will be left behind in the new Olympia. If we cannot be all the same, we can at least have a bottom line nobody will have to fall below. My new programs, the very things you chose me to be mayor for, will create that bottom line. And those new programs?"
Asbestos Jones loved leaving his audience hanging. He felt like a god from the machine, deus ex machina, whenever he swept in moments later to quench their thirst for answers.
"They start tomorrow."

Quoting Fell Skyhawk Amazing work. Really interesting premise. Can't wait to read the next one. Though my one thought while reading was... "Is that a pretzel he is eating for breakfast?"
Haha, thanks! An essential part of a steampunk diet ;)

Quoting C Stucky Nice story. Can't wait till the plot gets going. As for the build, I love how you introduced it vaguely at first, and then started to clear it up with more lights and photos that showed the complete build rather than just part of it. Good work!
Thanks man! Yeah I tried to contrast the outdoor light with the light of the fireplace. I'm glad it turned out well!

Thank you so much! To be honest I was nervous about how clear the builds were thanks to the lowlight shots. I'm glad they look ok!

Quoting Sir Flexalot How artistic! I love the dystopian feel (whether it's meant to be there or not, I like it :P) excellent scenery too'
Thanks! Yeah, it's supposed to feel a little bit dystopian. Not full on like 1984 or Hunger Games, though.

Quoting Rove Random Oh, YES. Magnificent writing, Justin! I can't wait to hear what comes next!
Thank you so much for your constant support, man! I really appreciate it. As a side note, I'm really thankful I found that Wadsworth poem to kick things off, because I had some pretty serious writer's block going into this. More coming soon ;)
