About this creation

My new second entry in this year's Speed Champions building competition - the real stars of the 1969 crime caper, the Italian Job were the trio of Mini Coopers in patriotic, red, white and blue.

Starring Michael Caine and Noel Coward, The Italian Job plot involved stealing $4m in gold and escaping in three Mini Cooper getaway cars through the traffic-clogged streets of Turin. Featuring a number of audacious stunts conceived and performed by Remy Julienne, the three Minis speed through shopping malls, interrupt a wedding party on the church steps, cross a weir and perhaps most famously leap between two buildings. The Minis are doggedly persued throughout by a series of unsuccessful Alfa Romeo Giulia police cars. Apparently Alfa Romeo were quite upset at the time as the Giulia Ti was considerably faster than a Mini Cooper S (well in a straight line at least!).

My other entry, a 1969 Alfa Romeo Giulia saloon got me thinking about the Italian Job, so a quick rebuild in dark bluish grey (olive green would have been best, but the range of parts in this colour is limited), the addition of a front bumper and a blue roof light and of course a policeman at the wheel enabled me to make a small scene, recreating the famous roof jump.

To reflect the tiny size of an original Mini, they are built 5-wide, and if any of you are wondering why the blue one has black wheel arches, well that is because Lego don't yet make them in blue :-(

I hope you like, more and better resolution pictures on Flickr

I watch a lot of dated movies, one of my favorites is the Original Gone in 60 Seconds!

Quoting Scott Bertaut I love car chase films, but I still need to see this movie, only seen the remake. Anyway, good job on these cars, the body shaping is great, so it was only by counting the studs that I could tell they were 5 wides. Nice idea of the jump scene too, I love having an action shot of MOCs. Great work!
Thanks Scott - the film is a bit of a classic, it's hopelessly dated now, but as a period piece with some pretty cool car chase scenes definitely worth watching. I overdosed on it as a kid and consequently haven't watched it for about 15 years :-)

Quoting Marc "Edge" R.unde So much has been said already. What else can I say, other than: perfect!? Oh wait! Make a green one with a black bonnet and Mr. Bean steering it from the roof. Haha! ~Marc
Hey Marc, I think the secret is to pick an icon (like the Group B Quattro, for example..) Mr Bean is an idea, also, I seem to remember a wicker-sided one in black in 'A Shot in the Dark' (the sequel to the original Pink Panther movie) :-)

Quoting Oliver Becker I miss a Mini in dark ("british racing") green! I owned one while study time! Never get curves of the road in a nearly square angle again like with the Mini! Also I'd never driven again so relaxed with max. speed of 110 km/h on the highway as at that time! You did a great job with this triplet and it's a wonderful reminiscence of the old movie I love too! :)
I know what you mean Oliver - Minis and corners.... Really glad you like them - thanks!

Quoting Petey Bird Wow man, fantastic work on these! Instantly recognizable. Really clever use of those new rounded tiles for creating the grille. This brings back great memories of my first car!
Thanks Petey, those quarter round tiles were kind of made for this build, not quite sure what I would have done without them :/ So many of my friends had a Mini as their first car too!

Quoting Nils O. Wow, that's freaking cool! I love the movie with one of the best car chases ever (it has even been "recycled" in a McGyver episode) and one of the best "cliffhangers" at the end of the movie. The minis are perfect in this scale, they really look like a small version of the official model. The combination with the Police Giulia is even better. Great (Italian) job! :-))
Thanks Nils, always a pleasure to hear from you, I knew the small scale Minis would be tricky, but it's such an iconic film that it had to be done :-)

Quoting barney sharman very nice, love the sequence, check out my version too, let me know your thoughts
Thanks Barney, glad you like it. I did take a look at your Italian Job builds, very cool! I guess the film offers a huge number of 'star cars', the Lamborghini, the Aston, the two Jaguars, the earth-mover, the mafia Fiat Dino, the Dormobile, Land-Rover, Minis, Alfa Romeos, police motorbikes, the bullion van, the coach, even the stolen diplomatic Daimler. Oh, and not forgetting the old van from testing - "You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!!"

Thanks Sven, I quite like seeing how the same build looks in different colours. I'm not sure if I prefer the red (which I built first) or the white?
