Lockheed F-104G Starfighter
My new Lockheed F-104G Starfighter model, a single seater figther aircraft based on my old TF-104G, but altered in so many ways that it`s actually a completely new model.
About this creation
My old
TF-104G Starfighter is the first LEGO scale model aircraft I made. After building my
F-86D Sabre , I decided it was time to do a new Starfighter as a successor, just like when the RDAF replaced the Sabredogs with the Starfighters back in 1965.

RDAF Fighters (1)

Only a few things from my old model remain the same: The Nose cone, the main landing gear, the tail rudder and some of the front fuselage. Everything else has been redesigned for a closer resemblance to the real plane.

F-104G Starfighter u (2)

Air-intakes:
Most of the, close to Minifig-scale Starfighter-models seen today, uses a 4-wide wheel arch as air-intake, which actually looks nice, but is out of scale and too big. I changed mine to be 3 L.U. (Lego Units) high.

F-104G Starfighter u (4)

Fuselage:
Another flaw of my old Starfighter was the boxy shape of the fuselage. I have used plenty of slopes for my new plane, particular at the tailsection, to give it a more rounded look. The tail-section also raises more gradually than before.

F-104G Starfighter u (5)

Nozzle:
The former smooth Technic wheel used as the nozzle is changed with a suitable tyre which looks more like the slats forming a real jetnozzle

F-104G Starfighter u (9)

Wings:
The wings are now changed to have the correct angle on both leading and trailing edges. On the old one both angles are the same. This also lead to a complete redesign of how the wings are attached to the fuselage. The total wingspan also has decreased 2 L.U.

F-104G Starfighter u (15)

Cockpit:
The cockpit on this model represents the look of a single seat fighter aircraft, as opposed to my old model, which is a twin seat trainer fighter. I`ve moved the cockpit one L.U. forward, again for a more accurate position.

F-104G Starfighter u (12)

Missiles:
The missiles has been on a diet, changed from 1x1 round bricks, to Technic pins with studs, for a slimmer look. All pieces used were grey but are painted white.

F-104G Starfighter u (13)

Colorscheme:
The colorscheme for this model, is the one used when Denmark recieved the first 29 Starfighters, as part of the US Military Assistance Program. An all grey fuselage and tailrudder, and white for the main- and tailwings. In 1968 the colors were changed to an all over olive green.

Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

Edit 21-5-2017:
A few pictures from the building process, showing the inner of the fuselage!

Here the F-104 with grey wings. I later discovered they should be white.

Quoting Mark B. Incredible model. The shaping is absolutely superb. I especially like how the intakes taper toward the rear of the aircraft, and the stickers really help to give it an air of authenticity. What was the saying about the F-104? Something like, "it was the aircraft that proved that if you strap a big enough engine onto it, even a brick can fly." ;-)
Yes, there`s a lot of sayings and anekdotes about the Starfighter. What most people don`t know is that around 40% of its aerodynamic lift is produced by the fuselage, 60% from the wings. I`m glad you appreciate my work, thanks for the comment Mark.

Quoting BATOH rossi fantastic, is a model more than worthy of the legendary Starfighter! did you consider making models with real landing gear function and minifig?
Thanks BATOH rossi, I`m glad you like. I don`t strive to make working landing gear or other functions, because it mostly would compromise the look of the model. The same goes for the Minifigs.

Quoting Scott Bertaut Well this is a plane you don't see very often. Great job on the improved shaping of the fuselage, the way it gradually slopes up at the back looks like it was quite challenging. I really like the tire you used for the back, works amazingly well. Awesome job!
Thank you very much Scott! I'm glad you like the improvements! When I look at the old one, I simply cannot wait to rebuild it!

Quoting Jeremy McCreary Probably like the olive green one better for both color and luggage.
Thanks Jeremy! For the moment I`ll keep my TF-104 as it is, but sooner or later I will make an update, but I will keep the color and the luggage tanks!

Okey, du har været grundig så :-) Jeg må indrømme jeg ikke har kigget så grundigt på det.

Quoting jim mcdonough well to be quite honest i thought this was just the same but in a different colour, but comparing them side by side(4 screen computer) its clear the modifications you have made which shows how much your building has come on over the years (not that i could fault the old one but its clear the differences) love the wee bits here and there i would never have thought to use a tyre at the back, the new slopes gives a much smoother curve both round and as the back raises up its so much better, wings i see the difference but again still look good on the old one, maybe its just the colour but the nrw one looks more smooth cockpit looks lower and fits the nose cone a lot better, one thing i would like to see is the cockpit done in the (trans black instead of clear) also a building process for this as a way of teaching some of us to improve LOL great work as always i never tire looking at your builds, building techniques and especially your attention to detail
Thank you very much Jim! And I never get tired reading your very nice comments, it`s really a pleasure! Regarding the canopies, these are not the same because the old one is a two-seater trainer fighter, and the new a single-seater. I`ll consider to use trans black for an update to the old TF-104, but it will take some time before that happens! I only have a few shots from the build process on my mobile phone, I`ll add them later!

Quoting Jeremy McCreary Excellent rendering of a classic Cold War plane, Henrik! Especially like the nasty-looking olive green one.
Thank you very much Jeremy! So you actually like the old one better, or just the color and the extra luggage tanks? I`m planning for an upgrade of the old trainer-fighter with the same improvements I introduced with the fighter version. But it may take some time.

Quoting Kurt's MOCs Marvellous work Henrik! The Starfighter is a beautiful airplane and you've captured the graceful lines and details perfectly. The improvements weren't really necessary since the original was excellent, but the upgrades are wonderful. Nicely done!
Thank you very much Kurt! I guess there`s always something to improve, even though it at first glance seems perfect.
