1973 Porsche Carrera RSR International Race of Champions (IROC) Speed Champions 6 Wide
This is my Speed Champions style 1973 Porsche Carrera RSR race car. The specific model I built is one of the International Race of Champions (IROC) race cars ordered by Rodger Penske for the inaugural 1973-1974 season.
About this creation

This build came about for a number of reasons. First off, the LEGO Speed Champions 917 plates with "Porsche" on them came in my Bricklink order. This led me to consider the 911 models that have that script on the side.

The choices were the 991 911R, the original 911R, and the 1973 RSR. I wanted to build a car with a duck tail or burzel (I know its missing the umlaut over the u!) so that put me to the 1973 model.

I also wanted a car with the wider body at the back. The car is 6 studs wide in the front and 7 studs wide in the rear.

The only factory RSR's that had the Porsche script on the sides were the cars ordered by Rodger Penske for the first season of the International Race of Champions that he created. The rest of the RSR's left the factory with "Carrera" on the side script. Also, Penske went to Lehigh University and graduated with an engineering degree. My wife and I have also graduated from Lehigh University, so that solidified my choice.

Now before you unleash the comments that say "the IROC Porsche's all raced with "tea tray" or "whale tail" rear wings, you are right. Take note of the last two photos at the Porsche factory in 1973. The cars were all built with the duck tail spoiler. They were converted post delivery to the whale tail. I built the red car in the front row.

The use of the side script forced me to change the curved slopes at the side of the car, and the variation gives it a different look from my 930 and more modern 911 builds.

I also went with a new technique on the front end. I used two 2x3 plates with the rounded end and a hole to curve the car under the lights. I think it worked out well.

For the large air duct on the front I went with the 1960's andn 1970's window brick again. These are really hard to find since I used all mine up from my childhood. The red window and red Porsche script plates dictated a red car.

The only sticker on the car is a LEGO Speed Champions Porsche crest. Man, I buy a lot of those sticker sheets these days.

I bought the rare white wheels for this car that are only available in one set as of April 2017. Technically, the wheels should be gray, but Porsche has a long tradition of matching wheel color to the side script color on the car. It looks way better with white wheels.

Even though its a race car, I put a registration plate on the back. Never know when those sneaky Porsche engineers are going out late at night to test their latest track weapon on the autobahn.

The shaping is fantastic! I love how you made the rear a stud wider. It gives it an aggressive stance. I also love the shaping of the front. Outstanding!
