The Contenders #40: To Contend Again

As Racta Magna continues to falter under the grip of the Shadebringers, it soon becomes apparent that the Contenders are very much alive, shackled and deluded by the vile poisons of Makuta Astrok. All of this is soon to change, however: soon, the Contenders shall rise from the ash of their defeat and take up arms once again for their forlorn city.

Quoting Sir Flexalot Oh, yeah, contenders are back. Also, when Doctor Forgen was talking in the same frame depravitie was saying he talks too much, it seemed as depravitie was talking
Thanks Duckie! Yeah- on one hand, you have to imagine she's been silent throughout Forgen's big speech- on the other hand though, it's equally as funny to consider that she's also quite loud and annoying- the hypocrisy can be part of the joke :P

Quoting joshua jacobson seems like sobek is totally in love with tyranca... big time, he'll have to join the toa some how? great job dude.
Thanks Joshua- Well, he is- but it seems more of a lust than it does genuine love, especially given what he says to Helda- but yeah, we'll have to see how this culminates...

Quoting Wondering Person Meh. I'm sorry, this one just wasn't as interesting. The bit with Aroxion and the one with the Gostoks was, but the rest? Not so much :/ Sorry. Also, I noticed there was no mention of Reshak by the Makuta? :'( poor Reshy XD
Aw, I'm sorry this issue wasn't really to your taste- I'm afraid I do have to focus on the good guys sometimes, y'know- it IS their story, after all. :P Yeah, as for the Reshak thing... you have to remember that Aroxion is not the most humble or considerate guy, so he's not likely to really think of others all that much... and Astrok never met Reshak, so she wouldn't really mention him- but hey, at least you got some callbacks to him in the Toa's scene, so that's something!

Quoting Callum ~ Some exciting build up in this issue. It's nice to see the Contenders back in action again, although it is a little strange that no security measures were put into place to stop them from escaping, but I can overlook that. :P The banter between the villains and their little internal conflicts and politics are really interesting as well. Hearing of Aroxion's plans of ultimate destruction is interesting, if a little typical for an evil plan. At least you gave an interesting motivation for him and I can appreciate that Aroxion is the more purely evil overlord whilst Shadownax is slightly more moderate in his villainy. One thing I took note of is the mention of the afterlife being eternal whiteness, which makes me slightly concerned about the thumbnail and how they are standing on a mound of white pieces. :P (I can see your cheeky forshadowing!) Galia bringing up the whole Platonic Justice event and feeling slightly cautious about trying to fight back is cool, I'm excited to see that be expanded upon. While this issue was slightly slower paced, there was some nice character building moments, and things are sure the romp up now as we enter the last 10 issues of this book!
Thanks Chains! Yes, it's been a long time coming; I think it speaks to Shadonax's laziness and absent-mindedness that he didn't assign anyone to guard the prisons- I guess he thought their heavy sedation would be enough to hold them, but clearly it wasn't. I'm glad you like the little discussions between the villains- a running theme throughout Contenders was how there is always dissent between the villains- and it's clearly most apparent with Aroxion and Shadonax. With Aroxion's agenda, I wanted to expand upon the whole 'cast the world into darkness' thing that the Makuta always do, but I wanted to explore exactly WHY it's so important to them- for Aroxion, he views darkness as a way of freeing the mind- he's doing it out of a deluded attempt to enlighten people, rather than the "I like shadow because I'm evil" spiel that one would expect from a Makuta. Nice analysis of visual subtext on the cover, my film school teachers would be proud. :P I'm glad you liked the character building too, especially the whole Platonic Justice- I wanted to emphasise that it left an impact on them, and wasn't just a one-off event. It's definitely ramping up in scale now- not long to go 'till the end!

Quoting Adamus Padamus Turning out really awesome thus far. I also really appreciate that the Platonic Justice still holds a major influence as well. I'm going to assume that, given the situation with the Gostoks, that they may end up teaming up with the Toa?
Thanks Adamus, I'm glad you're still enjoying it! Yeah, while the issue itself had been resolved, there's obviously still a lot to ruminate on and a lesson to learn- one that the Contenders are still figuring out. -and yes, it's not quite apparent what the Gostoks will do, but there is clearly some dissent going on between them and the Shadebringers. One has to wonder how that will culminate.

Thanks Daniel! I'm glad you still like Depravitie- I was kind of concerned that people would start to find her annoying, but I'm glad she's still got it! :D
