Mospeada Legioss (Robotech AFC-01H) (mini figure scale / 3 modes transformable)
Introducing my first lego version jet fighter V Mospeada Legioss (AFC-01H, Blue Alpha fighter from Robotech). This character has been in my To Do List for a long while. Finally, it took me few months to get it completed. I have been busy buying pieces online along modifying it, and you will be able to see a couple of new pieces which are just released in 2017.
About this creation
Genesis Climber MOSPEADA is one of the popular Japanese anime released in 80s. For more information, please go to the following link for quick reference:

I hope you guys are not feeling annoy about the volume of photo I put. I tried to eliminate some photos and only wish to retain those are necessary to present the details and the transformation process.

Although this model is fully transforms into 3 different modes, the process is pretty straight forward. As always, I made it without addition, removal or re-assemble of parts during the transformation. In building this, I focus on managing the following:

1. Look and shape - ensure every part and scale as well as the transformation process stay true to the original as possible.
2. Solid and rigid - make it sturdy and not feeling fragile when transforming it particularly.
3. Stability - be stable not just for display but also be poseable in soldier mode.

One of the challenges of this project is to match the white and blue color scheme based on the original design.

The landing gears can be concealed into the fighter completely. However, the rear wheels do not roll, in considering the size of it to be stored.

Shoulder cover can be opened to reveal the missiles pack.

See the way robot's hand is concealed in jet fighter mode.

There are quite a few toy manufacturers which produced Mospeada Legioss out there in the past few years, i.e. CMs and Toynami. However, one of the advantages of playing this model is you will never worry about breaking it. Everything can be reassemble because it is simply Lego, not like some other toys that in fact I have heard cases that they are easily be broken during the transformation process.

Lets get start to transform it.

Bring the thigh all the way out and then connect the knee area and the lower leg together by placing a little piece on it.

Pull down the tail fin.

Gerwalk mode is done!

In gerwalk mode (or guardian mode), it possesses some function of a fighter jet aircraft and some function of the humanoid battroid mode. As far as I concern, not many variable fighter mecha has mid-conversion mode like Legioss and another popular fighter - Macross Valkyrie. It is just an amazing idea and I love it so much.

Ankle can come out in different position just like so.

It carries a little sensor just like the original. It is stored inside the little compartment, and it can be lifted up with the cover and pulled out directly.

Lets get start to transform it into soldier mode.

Then to unlock the little piece which connect between the cockpit and the robot chest. It aims to hold them together so the whole component is not loose.

I used couple of click joint for its chest intake component, and also one on its waist.

Then bring the corkpit backward. In the beginning of the design process, I created a double hinge for that particular area. But at the end, I given up that idea and instead using a single hinge.

Transformation is done!

Basically, its scale is more or less close to 1/35 (In my opinion, Lego mini figure is pretty much close to 1/35. Not just in consider his height, but also his body dimension including his head size etc.). According to the website, the real height of Mospeada Legioss is 8.75 meters. In 1/35 scale model, it would be 25cm (875cm divided by 35). That is the height of this Lego creation I made.

Robot mode looks robust but it is still sturdy in overall. For display wise, it is quite ideal. As you can see the soldier mode is quite articulated. The size is not really that big and heavy. I realized the hip and knee ball joints still can cope with its weight and keep it balance in this scale, but may not for anything bigger than that.

There is a waist shuffle point made by click joint.

Thank you for watching!

This is excellent work. Attention to detail, colors, patterns are beautifully executed. My favorite parts, b/c they are technically difficult to do while maintaining structural integrity, are the compressing arms and legs. I started my own version of the Alpha a few years ago, but never got far with it- lots of challenges, which you've overcome beautifully. Incidentally, I had the same basic idea for capturing the round shape for the intakes, which give the Alpha such a distinctive look. Overall, amazing job! -M'Kyuun

Alex..one of the finest planes I have ever seen. This is better than the real fighter from this legionary series. As a Robotech/Macross fan myself I am in awe of this awesome creation. The only negative is that it isn't a set I can buy.

Oh this is just awesome. I mean, it isn't mindblowing after seeing all the Transformers models but a diamond still shines just as brightly, even if it is one among many. The space jet mode looks good. I love the retractable landing gear. The only issue is how awkward things might be for the pilot when in robot mode.

Quoting Chris Gay Beautifully well done! The details are spot on. Although, I would try and get the legs further into the body section in Fighter Mode, so that they do not stick out as much in the back. I'm always nit picky on that part of the Fighter. Overall, great work! **Input "Lonely Soldier Boy" here**
Thank you for your recommendation Chris! I have the same idea with you. In fact, I did try my best to figure out a better way to get the legs as closer to the centre of the fighter as possible, without shorter the legs when in soldier mode. I checked some of the real toys for reference and they also have this issue. This could be the best result I can do without alter the transformation process and worsen the soldier mode proportion.

Quoting Michael Crichton Any plans to make a TREAD / Beta Fighter to go with it?
Thats a good idea, but may not be that soon. The size of TREAD is bigger than Alpha fighter. For Beta fighter, I will need to see if those pieces all come with Red colour or not. Thanks anyway!
