Arch of Constantine
Roman Arch of Constantine: dedicated in 315 AD. The largest triumphal arch built during Roman times, and happily one of the best preserved! I had the privilege of seeing the arch in person a few years ago and I think secretly even then I knew I must do a Lego rendering. The build is part of a collaboration for Bricks Cascade 2017 called “The Time Isles” and thus will accompany a number of amazing “floating” islands that each represent a period in time.
About this creation
Let the flood of pictures begin! Can you tell I’m pumped to share my work? This, my largest and most complex creation by a leaps and bounds, took a few months of careful planning, building, buying, building, re-planning, building, buying… and so on. Please enjoy!

The main face.

View from above one of the imposing statues. Great selfie spot.

Artsy shot of a Corinthian column head with blurry roman awesomeness in the background.

The triumphant Emperor! Riding in on a chariot with a companion periodically reminding him he’s mortal. Granted… by Constantine’s time I think they may have done away with such silly messages.

An imposing view of the inner arch, I put a lot of work into making this pretty smooth and I’m really happy with the result!

Grunt level view.

And… A LEGO LEGION! Too bad by the time I bought them those shields were crazy expensive haha. I didn’t even try to get the older style legionary minifig.

A bridge that will connect my island to the next Time Isle.

Some decorative artwork. I was quite pleased I was able to get some angled plates to fill in that gap.

Vertigo!? This must be some very important emperor… or scholar… or scroll mail man.

The mini arch style came out pretty solid, I would have preferred a slightly more rounded look but I really liked the way this style evoked the way they stacked stones to build the arch.

Plants and bubbling fountains and such. Needed more color… so we got a garden!

Large support pillars. I really… really hope this never falls over and crushes my dog or something.

All the fun in one pic!

And… in another pic!

Boy this Hughes character sure posts a lot of pictures. Are we almost done yet? NO.

Close up of the chariot.

Senators, one of whom is an old fart. Apparently they used to march along with the processions. It went something like this: Prisoners of war, spoils of war, senators, the victorious leader in a chariot, his close companions or military leaders on horseback, then the legion (no weapons in real life), then I think finally the sacrificial oxen (shhh I didn’t have white!). I could check all this on Wikipedia to be sure… but meh, I read it sort of recently.

Egyptian prisoners led by their queen.

The legion again for good measure!

A mural: a barbarian giving the key of his city to a victorious roman?

Did you figure it out? I was surprised my wife got it on the first try. Yep it’s a boat!

Poseidon crushinating some poor city.

Romans about to put the hurt on a barbarian.

Some marble statues.

The rest of the marble statues.

My best take on roman script. Really it’s complete and utter gibberish. But the serif font came out pretty sweet no? Even if it sticks out of the stone instead of being carved into it…

A parting shot of my favorite side.

Now I know you’re thinking. Dude, I came this far. Reward me. I deserve something special for reading your ranting. Good on you, I agree, you do deserve something special. So here’s some artsy shots!

Google actually made this one black and white for me.

B&W is the best.

THE BEST!

Yeah, makes it feel like an old epic rome movie eh?

Alrighty, enough of the finished product. Let’s get some WIP pictures in here. You can see how my crazed mind and process works.

Not a small amount of beer was drunk during the creative process.

Making art. I got the idea of using arches to make round areas in the arch from Vladimir van Hoek’s mars build from the 2016 Moc Olympics. He did something similar for craters. Very cool.

Early growth was in fits and starts due to needing to constantly buy more bricks.

How I held those arch circle things together. And yes that is Chewbacca on the screen in the background.

The arch method. I had tried out 3-4 other methods before I decided this was the way to go.

Ha, bet you didn’t guess there was blacktron space magic in the Corinthian column heads!

Yup that's a spaceman inspecting the workmanship… and finding it lacking.

Emmet!

Figuring out the island design.

First attempt at roman script, way too big. (Lateres = bricks in latin or at least I seem to recall that’s what google told me).

The inside of the finished roman script. A bit tricky to get it together and hold it in all nice and strong. And quite messy due to lack of parts.

The island coming together.

The photo shoot.

*****

And you did it!! Honestly I didn’t think you’d make it this far. You’re a saint! My poor pictures and horrible humor would have turned away a less awesome person.

As for things like brick count, your guess is as good as mine. I’d say… thousands, but that’s obvious. This took me about two and a half months where I didn’t do much else lego-wise. Put in time most days. My creation is about 0.8 scale to a minifig – yeah the real arch is HUGE (21m high). I took plenty of artistic liberty in various details but hopefully if you compare to a real picture you’ll recognize it well! I hope you liked the color scheme, as far as I’ve seen there isn’t much in the way of Roman builds (or other themes for that matter) that use light bluish gray with gold and I’m quite happy with the result. Though I originally chose that color scheme because I have a lot more gray than white bricks. Thanks for taking a look and let me know what you think!

Hmm, how to wrap this up… shall I leave you with a roman quote? Yes? No. YES!

“Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.” – Marcus Aurelius

Woohoo! Yeah when it hit a hundred I couldn't believe it! Yeah, perhaps some day you'll come out for a convention eh! Too bad to hear you don't have much of a community there.

Quoting C Stucky Wow! Just Wow! Any estimates on how many thousands of dollars went into this? Did you buy primarily from bricklink or from other places? Love all the details with the statues, letters, columns, etc. The technique you used for the arch is pretty cool.
THanks! And well, hundreds for sure... I had to really up my parts count in all major parts categories. I'd say the most came from bricklink but I did a few PAB wall runs as well as a big grey parts bulk purchase at bricks and wheels in Bellevue WA :)
