The "Andrea Doria" class were helicopter cruisers of the Italian Navy.
Ordered in the 1957-58 Naval Programme, the Andrea Doria class were designed to operate the RIM-2 "Terrier" surface-to-air missile (SAM) system and Sikorsky SH-3 "Sea King" helicopters as both a platform for anti-air and anti-submarine warfare.
The cruiser was carrying on board 2 medium or 4 light ASW-helicopter.
The "Sea Kings" were found to be too large for the class and the Italians instead chose to use "Agusta-Bell" AB204 (later - AB212) helicopters modified for anti-submarine warfare. The design of the helicopter, I borrowed from Matt Bace.
Unlike English or French fleets Italians did not "reinvent the wheel", and used the latest at the time the US weapons systems. Therefore, the silhouette of the cruiser is strongly reminiscent of the American contemporaries - cruiser "Belknap" or "Leahy".
At the same time adding the national specifics in the form of eight excellent "Oto Melara" 76 mm/62 MMI guns to be used for point-blank anti-aircraft defence. The result is a great ship, especially for its time.
My model is built in the scale of 1: 350, for the construction took 537 (433) bricks. Photos in high definition in VK
Thanks my friend! Your "Hermes" turned out great - especially magazine cover! I just "fell" at that time! "Broadsword" yet is not very good. Tower-like mast heavy for simulation. In "Sheffield" class it is not very noticeable)) therefore is - the French, American, Italian ships)) And the Soviet of course!

Good modeling. I just thinking about this Andre Doria class isn't a little bit top heavy with the CIWS put so high? I would be curious about a helicopter landing in a nice gale in North Atlantic...
Thank you Gabor! The area of responsibility of the Marina Militare - the Mediterranean Sea. So the service in the stormy North Atlantic this cruiser is not threatened)) By the way, for this reason the Soviet helicopter carriers "Moscow" and "Leningrad" were transferred to the Northern Fleet of the Black Sea.

Another great build. Really love your work here. Will you be building more from the Falklands War? Maybe Admiral Belgrano?
Thank you, Per! Falklands? I have plans to build in the following models: Bristol and County cruisers, frigate type 22 ... Admiral Belgrano? Matt Bace has built a model of the cruiser Brooklyn class on a scale of 1: 200. It is unlikely that I will better :)
