Brick Ninja's entry

We had to build something out of the appendices. Which gives you about anything to build...
I chose to build Durin's pain, better known as the Balrog of Morgoth. He has just woken up, so no real flames out of his head just yet. It had nothing to do with time or lacking bricks in certain colors...
The Balrog is found in Moria, near the bridge of Khazad-dum (spelled right?). The dwarfs are digging and digging, finding gold, emaralds, probably lots of small rocks, maybe an African swallow and of course mithril. They dug too deep and too greedy, waking up the fellow which I build. Is it stated that it's a boy?

I like this picture a lot. I would not like to see him in real life. Although I do think none exist anymore. Unless we dig deep enough of course.

Fourth wall:
For this build we had to build something from the appendices. I have never read these. So I started to read and I didn't really like the first part. Someone suggested the part about the dwarfs, so I started to read them. It gave me no inspiration. Finally I decided what to build. The finding of the Balrog. I thought that the Balrog would be the most difficult thing to build, so I started to build it. It turned out a very large bit bigger...
The build contains lots of black pieces, of which a lot are slopes. I have never build something like this before. It was actually very fun to create. The horns need a little bit of work I think, they are a bit too square, they should be a bit more round, especially the upper side. Nonetheless, I am pretty satisfied with it.
I think it took me about 20 hours to create it. It is quite strong as wel. Only the horns are a bit loose. To create the underside of the build (in the end...), I had to turn the head around, the horns fell of. I had to attach them again, which worked, but not very good. It took a long time to fix them in place again, so I left it like that.

It was a fun tournament, I'm glad I entered. I have seen some very good creations, especially from Brick Ninja, DH, Jennifer Spencer and Noel Peterson.

My favorite build is the round 4 entry of Brick Ninja. I wish him the best of luck against me in this final round. I think we made it hard for the judges, especially 'cause we both build something completely different, not only a different scene, but also a complete different style. I like his build very much!

Good luck to the judges and thanks for hosting this tournament.

Elio

Awesome bust! The shaping came out quite nicely. Great integration with the lights for his eyes and mouth. Congrats on winning the 2016 MELO!

Better late than never (the judging, not the build =P). Both of you had great Entries and I really like how different they were. Elio, Love your take on the category. The idea behind the build was great though the build itself comes across as a bit awkward in terms of shaping, specifically the face which is very flat. The horns being a different color is also a bit off-putting. Brick Ninja, Your take is a bit more traditional in terms of medieval building, but you managed to pull it off quite well. The tower itself is exceptionally well done, I especially like the broken tower. My only gripe is the seeming lack of details. Aside from the tower itself and the siege weaponry, there's not much else that catches the eye. In the end, Brick Ninja gets my vote. Good job to both of you!

Quoting D H Congrats Elio! A really great round for both of you, and you certainly both deserved to be in the finals. 2016 MELO champion... you'll have to add that to your resume ;)
Thank you very much!

Quoting Hildigrim Took Fantastic work to you both and congratulations to being in the final round!! I love both builds and and I like that you both took a very different approach opposed to ending up with two similar builds... Brick Ninja: I love your build and the round tower effect, all the catapult type things are nice as well, I think if you went at a slightly smaller scale you could've packed in more details and that may have given a bit of a boost... Elio: Great work, I love the overall shape of the head, it reminds of the art piece "The scream" Wonderful job! I think that if there was some more 'cheese' slopes or other pieces to smooth it out that would be good... In the end my vote goes to Elio because of the uniqueness of his build with the horns and the fire on his head. Great work to both of you! And good luck!
thanks alot! That means I won the contest right? Three votes for me out of 5 judges?

Quoting Kevin Moyer Fantastic work! Definitely a gutsy move to build something like this, and I think it paid off. The complexity of large-scale character building is significant, but you did an excellent job. I think some of the proportions are a little off (for example, the horns feel a bit too chunky to me), but it is very well done overall. Also, it might be nice if some of the shaping was smoother, but I can understand how that would be very difficult when doing something of this scale. Because of the sheer complexity and effectiveness of it, you have my vote. Oh, and the light-up bits are awesome.
Thanks alot! Grtz, Elio

Quoting Michael Kringe Wow, this is a quite tough decision. Because I love both of your builds so much, I put this off for as long as possible. Both of your entries are excellent! Brick Ninja, I'm really fascinated by the huge size of your build. The wall is also really well done with its many different colored bricks and the flat grey lego parts. Elio, you delivered a technical really interesting and unique Balrog bust. Everything fits perfectly together and the glowing eyes effect is a really cool addition. At the end I vote for Elio's build, because of its higher complexity, but it was really close. Good luck with the other judges!

Dang, looks amazing. Nice choice making a bust; you can also avoid the wing controversy that way. One thing: it should be "Durin's Bane", not "Durin's Pain". :) Good luck!

You guys sure give the judges a hard time! You have some cool angles going on, particularly the horns, they look good. The light up eyes and mouth would be the clincher if I was judging, fire just tops firepower in my book :) Good luck!
