Category: The Scouring of the Shire
About this creation
MELO 2016: Round 5

Bracket: Barad-Dur

Judges: Mark Murphy, Kevin Moyer, and Hildigrim Took

My extremely talented opponent is Brick Ninja and his excellent entry can be found here.

For this round I chose the very industrial new watermill in the shire. For most of the chapter our poor hobbits can see the giant chimney with black smoke pouring out of it in the distance as they travel through their ravaged land.

Here's a video of the mill in action:

Here's another:

Here's some overview pics:

The hobbits chatting with the jerk miller Ted Sandyman.

Here's a sign to bag end where Sharkey hangs out. See how the angry hobbits have knocked out a few letters. They're not all with Saruman!

Alrighty sorry for the lack of fun commentary, I ran outta time! Here we go, good luck brick ninja!!

Quoting Andrew JN Very nice build! The functionality parts are quite splendid and seem to work perfectly! Nice touch with the black smoke also.
Thanks Andrew! It only had a few "grains" pop out in the three or four times I dropped them in... a much higher success rate than I expected ;)

Quoting Hildigrim Took Really impressive work both of you! Brick Ninja, you've captured the scene very well, I love your gate and walls etc, the trees are nice and the building fit together nicely! I think the landscape is slightly bland and a bit square but I love the stone path within the gates! DH, I like your as well, it all seems to fit together very nicely and I like how many minifigs are packed into it. The massive chimney is a great touch and the interiors are pretty much perfect. In the end, my vote goes to Doug. The interior and how real it seems/could be really impressed me. Good luck to both of you, you've got yourself a tied match. ;)
Thanks so much Hildigrim! Now the suspense will really kill me!

Quoting Kevin Moyer Awesome work, both of you. This was one of the more interesting chapters to interpret, since it wasn't in the movie, and you both did a great job with it. Both entries have a number of cool techniques. I really like the interior details in Brick Ninja's build, and the functionality in DH's build is also very cool. However, in the end, my vote goes to Brick Ninja. Good luck with the other judges to you both!
Thanks Kevin, can't blame ya, Brick Ninja has one heckova build!

Quoting ~ Saequis Great entry, I love all the detail and the function :) Good luck!
Thanks Saequis! I got the idea of making a working mechanism from my last opponent Carter, he did such a cool job making the doors of the black gate open that I thought I should try something new for me like that!

Quoting C Stucky Nice functionality. And the best part is that it still looks really cool! The worst part is that it is out of place in the Shire :( The Shire should be green and country-like (too bad Saruman had to ruin it).
Yeah Saruman is the worst! I read that Tolkien wrote that part of the book due to his own personal experience in coming home after WWI to find his home town was changed greatly with industrialization and a lot of his friends were gone or dead and it was a rough time for him.
