1978 MINING SHIP
About this creation

THE MINING SHIP WAS DESIGNED TO EXTRACT RAW MINERALS AND METALS FROM PLANETS AND ASTEROIDS

From the the most amazing tv space soap opera ever created.
Here in its splendid glory is the second most useful craft in the colonial civilian fleet.
The mining ship seen in Battlestar Galactica in the opening scenes and rarely anywhere else, perhaps a distant view now and then beside the Galactica. In the new series it made a come back with some modifications, These can be seen in the fourth season in the episode SCAR. The mining ship had landed on an asteroid and was Some day in the far future..

I created it in a retro colour scheme to add to the older look of the late 70's

The craft does stand on the landing gear unassisted and bares the weight. It takes four people to move this beast but I did make it in sections so that it can be taken to exhibitions around Tasmania.

The debate is on whether it will see another exhibit or become another massive beasty.

Quoting Stephan Schumann Verily, Your Mining Ship, deserves mine knee down, take off my hat, and spell a praise! I understand its' dimension - it looks so exstounding, epic, stunning, fascinating, real, and better than every other model, of the minig-ship, wether anyone shall try it with any sort of material; i mean: Your Minig Ship is absolutely able to be put into an Battlestar-Movie, and no one would ever notice, that it is made from an toy-system, called Lego! My favorites on this Moc, are the sheer appearance, the design of every inch, and beside the splendid shape, the engine-thrusters! Sorry, for mine commented, no ealier; but mocpages send me no e-mail, and i am captured in several big lego-projects... Best Regards, stephan schumann

Quoting Clayton Marchetti Wow! The amount of detail is mind blowing! I love the greebleing on the engineering section. I particularly like how you made those round dishes and the beefy landing struts. For a ship that's barely seen in the show you gave this a ton of loving attention!
Thank you Clayton It was a fun build to do with lots of challenges. I was amazed to find out the weight of the craft 54.7 kilograms all supported on those six small landing pads. Just shows how good Lego is in compression. Thanks for your comment. Cheers.

Quoting Tim C Okay. This makes me look silly. Garry, this MOC is earth-shattering. Love the work that you put into the large disks atop the work. Seamless, which should be impossible. The greebling is, as always, top notch. I'm still having trouble getting my jaw under control. Every time that I see that this thing is 12 ft. long, my chin hits the desk. Love the overall design. What I love about it, is that there is nothing about it that is particularly pleasing to the eye, which, in turn, makes it pleasing to the eye. It is purely utilitarian by nature. It makes it more realistic to my eyes. Why would a mining ship have anything stylish about it? You fearlessly brought to the community a work that was built as a purposeful craft, and everything about it has that unmistakable look that it has a specific use. Garry, the wait that you've put us all through is absolutely worth it. Great work.
Thank you Tim for your overwhelming comment. This was a fun and challenging ship to construct. As I started the build it just kept growing bigger and bigger. It used up so many elements so it has made creating another large build apart from the Orion very hard indeed. Think I should sell off all the elements I don't use just to purchase the ones I do. MMMM food for thought. Thanks again and I look forward to your next build which you have already posted. Cheers

Quoting Mark Kelso Love seeing work done on this kind of scale! Usually it takes a collaboration of builders to accumulate this much brick (I can only imagine the BL orders), and seeing it done by an individual is mind-blowing. But, above the scale is the attention to detail and the beautiful curves. It's another brilliant addition to the portfolio of work from the"King" of Lego SHIPs. Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!
Thank you Kindly Mark for your comment and I think you have just as many Bricks in your collection and your BL orders are even more impressive than mine. With all your incredible creations you have built over the years. Cheers and keep up your great creations.

Quoting VAkkron ™ THIS. Is Amazing. Instantly one of my favorite Lego build's I've seen; I can't quite believe it's engine block is wider than the length of the SHIP I built last year.
Thank you Vakkron for your kind words. It was a rather overly large build. It had to be to do it justice. I hope soon you will create one larger and put me to shame. Cheers

Quoting D H AMAZING! That ship is crazy big, and crazy awesome. I was wondering, why did he name it "1978 mining ship?" My initial answer was that to make something so big and at that quality he'd have to have started in 1978. But now I looked it up and I realize it's Battlestar Galactica, so cool subject as well!
Thank you DH for your comment.. I did it to peak peoples interest and to see what the crazy designer was on about. I have since done another write up and filled in a few blanks.

Quoting Gilbert Despathens What really impresses me is that you made a ship with so many round sections. Most SHIPs have a lot of crazy angles, but not many go for curves. You pulled off the discs very well.

Quoting matt rowntRee This is truly impressive, I can still picture that little fella straggling along in the rag-tag fugitive fleet. Excellent choice to tackle, always stood out as an oddball shape for a ship with unlimited possibilities as to its purpose. Great techniques to close off any gaps on the large round sections and those "feet" are gold! Outstanding!
Thank you Matt. Yes it is a rather impressive weird looking ship they created for BSG. I'd seen lots of small versions so it had to become a large Lego creation. The landing gear was a gem to create and being able to take all that weight 7.5 kilograms each disc plus the body not to mention the engines of 15 kilograms I am glad Lego is good in compression..
