MELO Round 1: Old Dale
Entry for round one of MELO 2016: "For this round, you may build anything from The Hobbit." I chose to make a loose interpretation of Dale as portrayed in the first few minutes of the Hobbit movie #1: An Unexpected Journey.
About this creation
MELO 2016 page.

The bridge and city gate from the outside.

The gate house from above.

Side view, see the thick walls and cutaway revealing filler materials.

The thriving marketplace! I went for a bustling scene with lots of plant life for decoration as I felt that channeled the movie depiction.

Other side view.

A knight of Gondor visiting the city. Would people from Gondor make it this far north east... SURE!

The Gondor ambassador and retinue. "Buy a monkey sir! Your wife will thank you!!"

Flowery vines.

Closed gate.

Open gate.

Lanterns hanging from chains... chains make everything cooler!

Market from another angle. Guard dog and all!

The gatehouse interior.

Gatehouse interior from above. No bottom floor... and no ladder or stairs haha. Next time!

Dwarves from Erebor delivering hand forged goods.

Decorations on the front gate.

Make sure the goats trim all the grass Timmy!

Mushrooms.

I like to think Dale has a mixture of rocks and dirt as they are near the mountains, so I went with a dirt river bank for a more fertile land.

The tower roof. Kinda neat with the segments and tiles and I like how the bottom border helped make it look more round... but still lots of gaps grr!

Monkey closeup! Why a monkey? I... don't know.

****

I hope you guys like it, I went a bit overboard with bricklink orders, but I'm really happy with the result, and I think it's my finest creation yet by a good measure! I had the idea to make a city gate after my last medieval creation (the Wizard's cottage) and I was really happy that I got to try it out as part of the MELO contest. Even if Dale pre-Smaug is pretty much only in about 1 minute of the three full movies haha ;)

Now a few WIP shots to finish it off:

Quoting Hadden Kurtz Awesome, wow! Very detailed! Although, there is no stairs to the upper room in Dale, and the whole set is supposed to be tan instead of grey, but overall a wonderful build that is filled with details!
Thank you Hadden! Yeah, maybe someday in the distant future I can come back and do a tan version, I do think that would look amazing :)

Quoting Cameron Wilson Wow! That's incredible! I love the tower and the red and yellow things in the archway. The cobbled floor looks a bit messy but everything else is great. Overall a very nice build from a scene that isn't built very often. well done! =)
Thanks a lot Cameron! I definitely agree on the cobbles, I hadn't done the math and I was waaaay short on the light bluish gray round plates haha. So much area to cover...

Hmm, realized I forgot to give props to a couple people... since MELO doesn't want edits to the page I'll stick with a comment! I stole those wooden shutters which are so awesome from Isaac Snyder's Harfleur build :) And I stole the neat idea for wooden structure sticking out of the wall from someone... can't remember who though :(
