Volkswagen Karmann Ghia
The model itself to me is one of the most beautiful cars. Interesting enough when it was made it was an instant success in USA since 2/3 of these were sold on the American continent. A 2 seater coupe that looks like a sports car but it wasn't since it had Beetle's engine. Originally I made it in red since red is the most common colour and I like the damn colour but this particular model in Medium Azure would really stand out so I photoshopped it just for the hell of it. I have decided to give it a shot at LEGO Ideas so when it gets approved and if you like it so much you would want it to be a set please vote for me - "link below"
About this creation
VOTE HERE, PLEASE

If youíre wandering about the wheels I cheated a little bit. Itís just a simple black 3x3 technic dish that I coloured in red a little bit :))

I though it would be a good idea to make a solid roof unit and a folded convertible roof unit. Both of these are attached to the chassis by 2 axles per unit.

I really hate it when door hinges stick out and this mechanism took a lot of my time here but I managed it. It is attached to the chassis by a single technic pin. Doors donít fall out but they can be detached from the car if you want to. It worked out perfectly.

The real carís trunk is in the front containing fuel tank a spare tire and some room for the luggage and thatís what I did. Yap, I managed to squeeze in the spare tire with no problem. Thereís even a suitcase with some clothes and accessories.

The engine was supposed to be a tricky one. The scale of the car is not too small but not very big either and since this is essentially a Beetle engine it has to be rather small. First version was awful and then I figured it out and it was done sooner than expected. It was fun making the damn thing compact and playable since as you can see you can extract it from the vehicle.

I would really love to make this one in Medium Azure but many of these parts, sadly are not done yet in this colour. One can only dream.

All features!

Quoting Max P. It looks beatiful, just like the real one. Love it! BTW, there's and Creator Beetle set in Mid-Azure, with a lot bricks which are in your car!
Hey thanx for the comment. A lot of people seem to like it even though it didn't get the supportI was hoping for on LEGO IDEAS. By the way Beetle is in dark azure. I wanted my car in medium azure :))

Quoting Dusan Stefanovic This is masterpiece. I am great fan of Vw beetle and Karmann ghia also. I am also member of vw beetle club in my country. Is there any chance to send me some instructions. It will be my honor to made it and give it to my club.
Hey there, I'm glad you like it so much you'd like to build one. You can jump over to my LEGO IDEAS page and under updates you can see the WiP pics and see it that way. Other than that I have no instructions. I never bother to make them :)

Quoting Rick S. This is incredible. The shaping is excellent, and good use of parts for the wheel arches. Also very clever how you made the folded shirts!
Oh, thanx a bunch. It's much appreciated that you took time to actually go through the pictures. ;)

Quoting Henrik Jensen A well-deserved, as well as a well-designed MocOfTheDay is exactly what it is. My own version is now an abandoned project, yours is simply too good!
Gee, man. Don't be so harsh on yourself. Thanx a lot for the praise but please do your own version as well. I'd like to see.

Quoting Andy Fleet Incredible, as a huge VW fan and someone who restored a KG I know them well, what I really like is that although distinctly blocky in appear it really works, yet something as curvaceous as a KG really shouldn't work in Lego at all. I know I wouldn't attempt it. Fantastic effort.
Gee, thanx, man. I was a bit suprised people seem to like it very much since I had to sacrifice some of the aesthetics and accuracy for toughness... thanx a bunch! :D

Quoting Henrik Hoexbroe Wow, wow and wow! This is certainly excellent. The medium azure looks so real that I thought it was! Many things can already be done in that color, so you are not so far off, I think! (I am hoping too!)
Wow, thanx for feeling thrilled about my project. I hope many people share your feelings over this as I do hope I will reach 10000 votes in time! :))

Quoting Callum Beeson I adore that engine, plus you could stick it into a beach buggy or beetle and it would still look good. Rest of the car is great too, no stickers needed thankfully

Quoting Blaine R. I worked on my brother in law's real Karmann Ghia (it's red) and am very familiar with its details. You nailed it really well in an unbelievably small scale for the amount of details you packed in. Fantastic!

Quoting Henrik Jensen Wow! It`s really excellent! Only thing that is wrong with this, is that you finished yours before I have mine half finished :-( The VW Karmann Ghia is one of my absolute favourite Classic cars, and you`ve done a marvelous job in recreating its subtle curves, full interior and engine. You have set the bar high for doing anything better than this. Also you have, well deserved, gotten the recognition from The Lego Car Blog for one of the best Lego cars on the WEB. Excellent Work!
i'm sorry to disappoint but I always tend to do cars that are beautiful but not popular enough for the people to build. I thought that was the case with this one as well. Never mind, why don't you do yours your way. I would really really love to see it done. Thanx for the great comments, there!

Quoting Vinny Turbo WOW ! This is great. The Karmann Ghia is a very beautiful car and its curves are hard to recreate with our favorite bricks but you did a wonderful job. Magnificent ! Very inspiring : it makes me want to build again.
Oh, that's great to know. I am also inspired occasionally by great builders. Go ahead, man. Build! ;). As for the curves, they are milder in reality but if you want to recreate them in this scale they have to be deeper and larger because some details I had to sacrifice for the toughness of the construction

Quoting William Henderson Awesome build! This would really compliment the other VW's that LEGO has already done. The light blue would look terrific. Great job as always.
That's the idea, actually. You see, LEGO in the past had made small model cars like Matchbox, Hotwheels and Majorette do and LEGO did a wide range of VW cars including Beetle, Camper and Karmann Ghia. That's how I got inspired ;))

Quoting Oliver Becker A wonderful MOC of a wonderful car, Vibor! Kudos! I owned a '69 beetle convertible in red during my studytime and it was a great pleasure (...if it worked!) ;) + :)
Thanx a bunch for the lovely comment there. I never owned a car but I do like them as you can see. I am aware that Beetle engine was the durable one but not the powerful. Later Karmann Ghia models came with a stronger, more suitable engine but an awful exterior. Such a pity ;))
