Around the World in Eighty Days!
About this creation
It's that time again, Gang! Brickworld 2015! This year VLUG decided to build its own version of Around The World in 80 Days, based on the novel by Jules Verne.
I built the section containing the Arabian Peninsula and the Port of Aden in Yemen. It's 4x5 32 square baseplates.

Plus a little bit of Egypt. Note the super ultra micro Sphinx.

Petra. Up the road a ways in Jordan.

The concept for my section was to have a blended micro/minifig scale set. One could also call it an 'Exploded View' of the ancient port.

Various characters wander about the city.

Going about their daily tasks.

Or just standing around.

Hey, what's HE doing there?

Gotta have an eye patch guy.

R2 and 3PO, naturally. They're not the droids you're looking for, move along...

"Bring out your dead!" Wait, wrong movie...

"Hey, bub, this a market, not an art gallery."

And for The World of Lights!

4th Wall:

So, this was a fun project! I wasn't quite as ambitious as the past two years, but this was still pretty big. Bummer I wasn't able to attend, but my pal Chris Phipson was kind enough to house the eight boxes I shipped to him a few months ago. And my buddy Bets put the whole thing back together on-site. Thanks!

Here we've got the VLUG group with pics of the entire 'Best Collaborative Build' display. Congrats to the VLUG crew!

And Beyond the Brick's interview with Heath Flor, this year's HMFPIC. Way to go Heath!

Now that I'm a contributor to the Bricknerd Blog, I'll be doing a post on the whole collab, so stay tuned!

Quoting Jack Sparrow Though I like your Battlestar work, this right here spoke to me. This is such a model. The detail is fantastic, and I love the elevation changes, and the surf detail. Awesome!
Thanks, Dude! It was a lot of plates to create that effect, but I was happy with how it turned out.

Quoting matt rowntRee This was stunning to see set up and with all the lights, stellar work! It was funny, in the end we didn't need any templates as Dave's awesome mosaics were bricks rather than plates. Tyler popped off those in the way and rebuilt around your landscape. Oh well, at least we had enough toothpaste to fill any gaps. XD Excellent!
That's pretty smart thinking on Dave's part. Must have helped with the trains going in and out of the ROF, too, eh? Great work on the project, Matt, can't wait to see what you post. I was impressed by those first couple of pics of the framework in your driveway!

Quoting Kermunklin the Giant Evil House Head Superb! Brilliant stuff, as usual. Dig the ultra micro nano sphinx, but the "exploded" port is Top Notch, especially the light up pics. My favorite feature is probably your very well groomed and naturalistic desert-scape. The VLUG pics are too cool, although I don't remember the hover-train from the book (but it has been a while). Great stuff, as always!
The hover train was in the director's cut, I think... Thanks, Dude!

Quoting Peter Wilt Amazing.
Quoting Subic Vedran Refined MOC! I also like shaping Petra very much. Not color. It is carved from solid rock beeing the same color as other rocks arronud. I totaly understand to make it standing out from lansdcape different color is good way to achive that.

Quoting LukeClarenceVan The Revanchist Gorgeous build! While the marketplace inside may not be an art gallery, the build sure feels like it belongs in one. Love the layering of the landscape, and great details in the port. I'd not seen this in the few BrickWorld photos that've popped up, so it was a pleasant surprise to see your contribution here first. Also, kudos on being on the Bricknerd team now. I look forward to seeing how you tackle LEGO coverage online - you seem like you have the right wit for it.
Thanks for the great comment, LCV! I tried to make it look like flowing sand as much as I could, and blend it into the city walls. I also had to submit a template of the butt end of the entire build to Matt so he could tell Dave where to make the mosaics. Whew! What an operation. Blogging has been fun. And once more of the crew has posted their pics, I'll be getting to this collab. So stay tuned!

Thanks, Chief! You know, not all that time consuming, actually. Matt sketched out the map, so that part was fairly easy. Lots of layering, Duplo in there underneath to build up the structure and save money. Lots of tan. And more tan. Click the ling to the Flicr group, you can see the whole thing.
