Venator W.I.P 4 - Major changes-
Hi fellow Lego addicts! After months of hard work (and looooots of cursing) I can present you all a nice little update on my biggest build ever! Let's get straight to it shall we?
About this creation
At the end of W.I.P 3 I said that the triangular shape sat a bit to high on the centersection. Before I could do anything else, this had to be sorted out. After a few weeks, this was the result:

Looks about center right?

The entire shape was dropped one row, you can see the difference here:

After the shape was finally in order I could start with one of my favourite parts of this build... That's right it's greeble time!! I started out around the side hangarbay doors. This is actually a mix between the layouts of Eric Varsegi and Iomedes with a personal twist:

When I was happy with the parts around the doors, I started putting plates over the technic shape and slowly started building up the greebles

After a few hours building they started to look something like this:

Some close-ups:

One side done!

I also wanted to show some of the smaller guns on this ship. These were inspired by Mark Kelso's Spirit Of Fire build. I try to incorperate details of MOC's by builders who inspired me, so naturally Kelso is one of them since he's an inspiration for all of us here.

This angle shows the texture of the greebles. I used old dark grey and dark bluish grey to add a bit variaton colourwise.

Starting on the other side:

Coming together quite nicely!

Some more of the "Kelso guns"

Last section to finish, jeej!

When putting on the greebles and staring at the ships for days while doing so, I was wondering what could be improved... When you look at perfected design by Iomedes it's hard to improve anything! The only parts I found that had way less detail compared to the rest of the ship were the hulls. So I decided to "pull a Kelso" and started going down the dark path of deleting every stud (or at least most of them) That way I could build hulls like Jerac did on his amazing Star Destroyer. This is the rear section after the "smooth treatment"

The centersection smoothed out as well

Onto the hulls then. This is a pic from Episode III that was used to build the new hulls. I already had one build with plates, but this one could no longer be used without needing thousands of tiles to smooth it out.

Another picture from the movie was used to build the bottom hulls, these will be build first

Here's a close-up of the details of the bottom hulls. I may be weird to change the entire build for some details like this, but I'm confident that it will look awesome when it's done.

The bottom hulls as they are today... When building these I noticed that the bottom hangar was to much to the front. Luckily this is connected to the ship with just a few pushpins so it was sorted out in 5 minutes.

This is a picture of a modelkit of the Venator...

...and this how it will look like in my case. The details in the hatched section won't be visible since that where the second leg comes out of the ship.

Piece A:

Piece B (I already showed this in W.I.P 3 but now it's also smooth ;) )

I also finished two more parts that will go on top of the top hulls...

... this shows how they will look like (in this pic you can see General Grievous' other ship, the "Visible Hand")

Something else I plan to do is to put light into this ship. The reason why the greebles took so long (next to the constant waiting for parts) was because I had to build in a lot of 1x1 light blue transparent pieces into the sides. This is how it looks when the light are turned off:

And this is what it will look like when all the lights are in place( I used a flashlight for this pic)

The bottom hangar will be lighted by some of my remaining power functions LED's

The battery packs will be situated underneath the republic logo's of the top hulls. Those can be taken out so you will have easy acces to them.

This is what I'm up to now... I'm mocking up the bottom hulls to figure out my lego frame/support that will hold up the bottom hulls (gravity can be a serious b***h!!) This will probably be the most irritating job of the whole build.

Once these are up I can run the wires for all the lights. Hopefully I can show you all some more of that later this year. That's it for now, hope you all like the changes... if you do, please leave a comment! Later y'all!

Thx man! I moved the ship downstairs a few months ago and it sits on a bigger stronger table now ;) I currently am working of the bottom hulls. I'll post an update very soon! Thx for stopping by ;)
Quoting Kyle Bartley You are a madman. Great work. I hope that table is stronger than it looks. 10/10.

Awesome, thx very much! When I first saw the Venator build by Erik Varszegi, I tought it could never be possible to build such a huge ship, but when I saw yours I really wanted my one and that's how i started this build. Love your Lego room too!! Thx again for the help!
Quoting angel 06 hello. Very good work.it's an good idea to install the light.i'am going to send you as soon as possible the picture that you have me ask.good luck and soon has.

Maybe they do, but for now I'm all about finishing rather changing even more stuff.
Quoting Krištof Pučejdl No wedge plate doesn't mean end of the world does it? :D There are several techniques to get cleaner edge, some of them were used on Venators (i.e. the one invented by Thire5 on his model) or the one I used on my tiny version (which has even finer steps) but there are more approaches that would be applicable in your massive scale. All in all, this solution with wedge plates seem a bit dull in comparison with the excellance of the rest of the model.

The reason why the red hangarbay door is build like that is that there are no wedge plates with the right angle to achieve the perfect line. This is due to the length of the hangarbay doors. The hangar bay doors might see an update in the future as I think of splitting it in 2 parts and put motors in there so they can open like in the movie and the clone wars series ;) Thx for stopping by!
Quoting Krištof Pučejdl I really like how many inventions do you put into this build. It's turning excellent and I really like the idea of making hull plates out of bricks. I can't wait for more updates, cheers! EDIT: I just realized there would be a scope for big improvement, probably the only thing I didn't like on the original Varszegi's version. These red top hangar doors should wedge smoothly towards the front. How about getting rid of those steps (2x4 wedge and then straight, 2x4 wedge again and straight) and try to achieve perfect line for that edge?

Sorry, but I haven't got instructions for this. It's all built by looking at pictures of Erik Varszegi's and Iomedes' versions of the ship.
Quoting mcorre mcorre Hello, my name is Maël and I want to know if you have instruction of your venator and if I can buy it. I would be happy if I could buy the instructions ! Thanks for your answers and bye bye. mcorre

That's so true! It's always cool to have something unique like this in your house! I'm starting to feel a bit like Raith Sienar actually, having all those ships in my Lego/Star Wars room :D
Quoting killswitch95 [RELSH] love these large scale WIP shots, because having yourself what amounts to a massive ship yard in your house is just the best feeling in the world, or rather in the star system haha

Thx Blaine! The table is quite strong although I'll be getting an even bigger one once I move my Legotorium to the attic. There I have even more room to continue this build. I'm glad you like the new hull design. It's a bit more difficult to igure out how to put these on the ship, but it will turn out great in the end. Thx for stopping by!
Quoting Blaine R. A staggeringly detailed build. I'm surprised that the table can hold the weight of your WIP MOC. I like the bottom of the hull design.

Yes! This is brilliant, to make the top and bottom plates from bricks with no studs. I can say that this will become the most beautifull venator! Good luck with your build!
