2015 BBFC: Stretchbot and Diminudroid
About this creation
It's that time of year again, The Brick Built Figure Contest. For details on the contest click here, here, or here, but not here.

In all fairness, I did warn you.

For this year, I decided to do something different:

I built robots. Robots are among my favorite things in this world...that and monkeys.

Meet Stretchbot and Diminudroid.

When I started to brainstorm for this contest, I looked around the web for a well-known duo that I could depict in the old ABS, but I decided to go a different route. The relationship between two well-known characters is built in. Building two figures that have never been seen and creating some relationship between the two would be more difficult. I immediately had this idea. Let me explain.

There was once a roboticist who had a bad habit of building robots that were meant for menial tasks. He also had a bad habit of finding the bottom of the bottle before he worked. He had the idea for Stretchbot when he noticed that he only had access to the top shelves of his pantry when he used a stepladder. He noticed this while he was trying to find a missing slipper. He decided to build a smaller robot that would be tasked with organizing his shoes.

Okay, he was certain that he could find other uses for these robots.

As these things usually happen with the roboticist, he got himself all rosy-cheeked and got to work simultaneously completing his two projects. He got a bit sloppy by the end of it, and accidentally connected the torsos to the wrong legs, switched the robots on, and went to bed.

Stretchbot noticed the error immediately and pointed it out to Diminudroid, but Diminudroid didn't feel any mistake had been made. This entry depicts Stretchbot trying to convince Diminudroid that they should switch back, while Diminudroid is pointedly ignoring Stretchbot's pleas, while enjoying the view that he was secretly certain wouldn't last.

I know what you're thinking, and take solace in knowing that I worry about my sanity sometimes, too.

Oh, well. The Diminudroid torso/Stretchbot legs combo is 94 pieces and the Stretchbot torso/Diminudroid legs combo is 104 pieces. I was able to utilize the two mystery pieces that I own in the tail shuttle and the mudguard.

Let's keep going.

Featured in Flickr's Explore.

Diminudroid enjoying the view and being aloof.

Stretchbot wondering why he can't seem to get through to Diminudroid.

Bonus pic: How they looked when the roboticist woke up the next morning, and through the fog of a hangover, corrected his mistake.

94 pieces.

104 pieces.

Thanks for looking, all! What do you think?

Beautifully done Tim. Is great how you decided to swap parts over and make them so much more quirky and desirable. Well done.

First, sorry that I'm 2 weeks late but as promised, here's my comment! I really like these guys because of the parts usage of course, but most of all because they really show character although we don't know them! I value creativity and there's a load of it here, to make us empathize with two toasters :-) Your build and (very funny) story made me wanna meet their roboticist of a father! I love the modular function and expression on both of them: Diminudroid looks like a pest and Stretchbot like the glasses-kid who gets bullied in recess... Great creations, hope to see you next year!

Quoting Stephan Niehoff Top stuff Tim. the two have become really good. This is very difficult for the judges this time.
The judges definitely had their hands full on this one. I can agree with their decisions, but I'm still bias;)

Quoting Tirrell Brown Interesting machines. Even though you have defined their personalities, I can't help myself to identifying them as " the strong one and the smart one."
Fair enough, Tirrell. I can certainly see that. Thanks for the comment.

Haha, great twist. The build is really quite stunning, a mix of perfect engineering and expressive hilarity. Not to mention the strikingly well done colour scheme.

Hilarious! Love the “What the…” expression of Strecthbot’s face as much as Diminudroid’s proud “I’m huge!” one. These guys are quite adorable and their interaction works splendidly to define their character. Their personalities come through with their fantastic reactions to each of their odd situations and we are all given an odd lesson about walking in another man’s shoes. I love the economy of pieces to accentuate their purpose as well, it lends nicely to their relationship. Like Aaron’s Rescue Robots, I can picture an entire toy line and children’s show telling us that drugs are bad and to eat all our vegetables with these guys. Or as comic relief for a serious War in the Stars. ;) Outstanding!

Hello Tim and congratulations to your unique robot- "Pat and Patachon" couple(american: "Ole and Aksel"), 'cause they remind me in a very sympathic way of this danish silent movie duo! Maybe you know the original, than you know how it's meant... Best of luck in the contest!

Quoting Clayton Marchetti Absolutely brilliant Tim! These two made me chuckle. These two could easily be from a block buster movie! I really like that you showed them mixed up and how they should really look. I can see this is the start of a beautiful relationship. Magnificent work as always Tim!
Thanks, Clayton. Getting a chuckle was exactly the response I was looking for. I wanted to do something ridiculous. This particular type of figure is something I would like to try again. Hopefully, I'll find the opportunity.

Quoting MortalSwordsman . Fantastic builds and characters. Love the subtle expressions you have created. I also really like the hips on Stretchbot. Good luck my friend.
I appreciate that, Joe. Creating an expression on Diminudroid was a challenge, but I was pretty pleased with both of them. After Bananaman last year, I was looking forward to something from my favorite professional LEGO builder. Sorry you weren't able to throw down this year. Maybe next time, man.

Quoting Aaron Gomez (Finn Tegotash) Great character in these bots! I really like the printed details you added to their torsos! Good luck!
Thanks Aaron. I kinda felt like the printed tiles was a bit of a cop out, but I couldn't afford to make anything more detailed because of the parts limitation. Glad you liked it.

Quoting David Roberts Excellent! I like Stretchbot's shiny toecaps and the detail of Diminudroid's face & body. The way that they can be swapped around is great fun too. Characterful, fun builds!
Thanks, David. The toecaps was something that I did on a SHIP a while ago and thought, "Hmmm...robot feet?" Just needed an opportunity to use it. I appreciate the comment.

Quoting Pico van Grootveld Cool job Tim, I'm liking these personalities. The switchable feature adds a nice level of playability. On another note, when is your pirate beauty going to get the spotlights? :D
Next thing on my agenda. I still have some editing to do to the pics, because I procrastinate. Hey, I gotta be me;)
