Space: 1999 Mark IX Hawk
Here is my LDD model of the Space: 1999 Mark IX Hawk. It is built to minifig scale. You can also see larger images at my Flickr site: https://www.flickr.com/photos/118702264@N05/sets/72157649725608851/. You can find PDF building instructions on my Etsy site: www.etsy.com/ca/shop/KurtsMOCs. I have also posted the Mark IX Hawk on Lego Ideas. I would greatly appreciate your support!
About this creation

The Mark IX Hawk made its debut in the episode “War Games” and square off against Moonbase Alpha’s Eagles. Two Combat Flights are destroyed and the Hawks strafe the base unopposed. The attack proves to be an illusion played out in the minds of the Alphans to demonstrate the consequences of contact with an alien civilization that wishes to remain in isolation. It is the only appearance of the Hawk in the series.

The Hawk was commissioned in 1997 by the Global Defence Command and designed to counter extraterrestrial threats against Earth and its colonies. The entire fleet was destroyed on September 13, 1999: the day the Moon departed from Earth’s orbit.

Smaller than the Eagle, the Hawk is more streamlined and designed as an attack craft. Although the Eagle was the undeniable star of the series, the Hawk is a sentimental favourite among many fans.

The Hawk can travel twice as fast as an Eagle and is more maneuverable. The side rocket boosters point outwards for increased lateral movement and eight vertical boosters underneath indicate landing potential although no landing gear is evident in the design.

The command module is similar to the Eagle in design except that it only has the inset viewports on the top. The Hawk is crewed by a pilot and weapons officer. The command module also functions as the Hawk’s lifeboat in case of an emergency.

The Hawk is comprised of a modular structure: there is a command module, a life support module with a weapons array, a service module, and the main drive assembly. The main fuselage connects the life support module to the service module, which houses a single fusion reactor. The main drive assembly is flanked by two side rocket boosters. I designed the Hawk to be modular, following the logic of the original design. For continuity, I based some of the components on my original Eagle Transporter.

The command module is similar to the Eagle's command module. I modelled the interior on the Eagle's interior. I could not find interior images so my rendition is speculative. If anyone has images, please send them my way!

The life support module has access doors at either end and an entry hatch in the floor. The Hawk’s main armament is situated on the short wings. The are two tubular missile launchers hypothetically carrying six missiles each and two rectangular laser batteries.

The service module contains the fusion reactor and the main drive assembly. It also contains the supporting structure for the rocket boosters. The array on top of this module has been identified as either a solar array or radiators for the fusion reactor.

For the series, the Hawk was originally painted completely white but the film editor felt the Hawk and Eagle appeared too similar.

The Hawk was painted with orange stripes and the viewports painted white. After filming, the viewports were painted black again for model photos.

Here is the Hawk next to my Eagle Transporter. Thanks to Wikipedia and Space: 1999 Catacombs for information and specifics.

Quoting Henrik Hoexbroe Nice. One nerd/geek hint; When portraying Space-1999, never do so posed on top of a planet/background in space, as the special-effects tecnology used for the production, did not allow for that (double- and triple-exposed film) :-)
Thanks for the FX advice Henrik! I guess I was overly ambitious!

Quoting El Barto ! Cool design! I'd say it's a series due for a reimagining.
Thanks for your comments! I agree: a re-imagining would be interesting but I have some strong personal reservations about someone like Michael Bay messing with the design of the Eagle or Hawk! Some things are not meant to be "improved" upon! Of course, if I could build it out of Lego I might be persuaded...

Quoting matt rowntRee Oh god, I vaguely remember this from the show! But I do remember that it wreaked havoc on the base. But, then again, pretty much everything wreaked havoc on the base. ;) Absolutely love the modules especially the engines and the command. Outstanding!
Thanks Matt! I'm glad you like the model. You are correct: Moonbase Alpha took a lot of punishment but always seemed in perfect condition at the beginning of every episode. Too bad the Hawk didn't have more screen time. It could have been a great asset to the Alphans!

Quoting Thomas of Tortuga Wow, you're really devoted to this series. Very slick engineering going on in the cockpit.
Thanks for your comments. I was a big fan of the technology in the TV series; it had a certain level of mechanical realism that was absent in a lot of earlier science fiction spacecraft. The show itself was hardly free of scientific errors but the design of the Eagle and Hawk seemed plausible to me. After building my Eagle, I thought I would explore the design of the Hawk. It posed different challenges than the Eagle but was fun to build. I'm glad you like this model as well!
