MOCOlympics 2014 round 6 'Elio Salsano vs Delatron 3000' -Minotaurus-
Build a mythologic creature. I build my version of a minotaurus. I found a reference painting. (digital I think) It was a very tough build, but very fun. Hope you like it.
About this creation
MocOlympics 2014 MocOlympics homepage

My opponent: Delatron 3000

Delatron 3000 vs. Elio Salsano
Mythological creatures: Give us your brick-built version of a creature from an ancient myth! Anything from Medusa to the Kraken! While the focus will be on the creature, we also want you to include its habitat. One restriction … no dragons. We’ve seen too many. As cool as dragons are, please pick something that hasn’t been done to death. No size restrictions.

The head of the minotaurus was the final thing to build and also the hardest. This was the second design, the first was too big.

The belt. I wanted to use pieces in a different way. The inverted tire is not my idea, but I've never seen it in a belt before. I really like the bags on the left.

The mouth was pretty fun to come up with. I've tried e few different ways and I did not like any of them. This one came up by accident. I found the robot arms in my hinge basket. With a technic pin in the middle and done. (It fell down a lot...)

The belt around his torso is made of 20 pieces from Bionicle, I think. I ordered them for my round 5 build, but could not find a good use for them. I like them for this build.

The arm was a challenge, it has a lot of weird angles. But I think it looks good. I wanted to put a tire around the elbow section, but that didn't fit, so I made a bracelet out of them. The claws are okay. Are there any hinge pieces with 1 stud?

As you can see, it does not have feet or something like that. I ran out of reddish brown tiles, so I had to think of something else. A good friend of mine suggested to place a rock in front of it. I still needed to build a lot of reddish brown stuff, so this was a great idea.

Fourth wall:

A very tough build. Toughest yet. At first I wanted to build a phoenix, but I do not have a lot of yellow, orange and red. Then I want to build a centaur. Then I found a picture of a very cool looking minotaurus. And then I started building. First the torso, then the arm, next the belt and the legs, with a lot of weird angles and a thousand hinges... After that I found out that I did not have any reddish brown tiles left. So I started to take down my round 5 entry, which was still on my LEGO table. Next was the head. This was the most difficult part. Yesterday at 11 P.M. I wanted to put the head on and the creature fell down in a lot of different pieces. (Yes, again.) It took me 2 hours to rebuild it with a lot more support. This morning I made the horns, which I truly like. And in the end the spear.
The minotaur is waiting for someone to enter his maze, he wants to fight. He is pretty evil looking. In the end I think it took me about 15 hours to complete. (without rebuilding)

At last I would like to say something about something else. The MocOlympics are great to compete in. It really stimulates you to build something you've never done before. So judges, thanks for that! And thanks to my opponent Delatron 3000, who makes incredible builds. Because of you I am trying to build something that's worthy of a semi-final against you. I do hope I will win of course, but if you win it will be well deserved.

Good luck to all 4 semi-finalists!

Thanks for watching, please leave a comment.
Greetz,
Elio

Quoting Mark McPeek I see my vote is unnecessary, and I'm glad for that. It is so difficult to chose between both you and your opponent's fantastic entries. I love the angles you achieved with your Minotaur. I can only imagine how tricky they were! Great show this year, Elio! I was extremely impressed with your entries. I hope you come back to play again next year!
Hi Mark, Thanks for your support! I'm not sure I will come back next year. It was a lot of fun, but it also took a lot of my time. But, I must say, I think it was worth it! Greetz, Elio

Quoting Dennis Price It pains me to tell you that your opponent got the vote, but only on the basis of overall presentation. Both of you built wonderful creatures and I'd love to say that you'll get some sort of consolation prize, but I'm not authorized to do anything but vote. Excellent work, and good luck to you!

Quoting matt rowntRee What a beast! Mean and imposing, looks like he'd make a meal out of any traveler unlucky enough to meet him along their journey. Even Daedalus would be impressed with this build. Truly epic details and technique and on a properly humongous scale. I have to say that my only issue has to be with his proportions as they seem just slightly off. But JUST slightly. It is, however, enough to give Stu my vote in a sadistically close match. Your show throughout the MocOlympics and especially in this round has been inspirational. I have loved and anticipated every step you have taken with amazing enthusiasm and vigor, this one was no exception. And, like Tyler, it is my hope that you will continue to build figures like this as you have found quite a talent. Your students should be proud of your show here, I am. ;)

Quoting Chris Phipson Wow, wow, WOW to both of you! And yes, I'm lazy and doing the same comment for both. Ok, here we go... Elio, that is just a stunning creation! I love his pose like he's ready to "come get some!" Delatron, while you may think the environment isn't up to snuff I think it actually plays perfectly into showing the size of the creature and the solitude of the "victim." This matchup is another perfect example of "which moc grabs Chris' attention more?" And with that in mind, my vote has to go with Delatron. It was the use of color that won me over. The loin cloth, bulging yellow eyes and purple tongue just screamed "Look at me!" Seriously though, both entries were just perfection! Good luck with the other judges! ~ Chris.

Quoting Tyler Halliwell Elio, this is an exceptional build. I love the pose, and you did a fantastic job with your first creature. However, I have to give my vote to Stu, his overall figure just spoke to me more, and was so stunning when I first saw it. All is not lost though, you could still bring in a tie and make us bring out the tie-breaker person. P.S. Please build more creatures, I hope this category has inspired you to do more in this area. Creatures are the best.
Hi there, Thanks a lot. I loved building the creature. The short amount of time to build it in is a bit stressful though...

Quoting Delatron 3000 Hey Elio! So much to say here, first your Minotaur is great. Lovely build, reminds me a lot of an AD&D book cover by an artist called Brom which featured a minotaur - I wondered if it was the same picture you saw? I love the colours and pose and the head especially has a lot of character. I can sympathise with running out of a colour - my build has most of my red in it and that is after a bricklink order. My order should have been bigger! Thank you so much for the kind words too, I am honoured that you think so highly of my builds and thrilled to get praise like that from such a good builder. I think that you have blown people away in this contest, taking on whatever category you have been given with a great attitude and viewing each round as a new experience to try rather than a problem. I knew I would have to put in my best efforts for you and I am glad the judges will have a tough time of judging. Good luck, Stu.
Hi Stu, Thanks a lot. That's the nicest comment I got! Thank you very much for that. I am not sure if the reference picture is from D & D. http://xn--80aqafcrtq.cc/nl/?p=489943 is the reference picture. Greetz, Elio

Great build Elio, this is one truly intimidating Minotaur! I like the fact that you included the enormous spear as well. As a spectator this year it's been great to see your excellent entries, this one definitely included! Good luck with the judges...
