Colonial Transport Ship
About this creation

Before the First Cylon War, transport vessels such as this were the backbone of the Colonial economy.

During the War they provided logistical support to the Colonial Fleet.

After the advent of gravity deck plating, however, most vessels in this class were scrapped.

4th Wall: I built this for the SHIPtember event over on Flickr. It's about 110 studs long, 15 pounds, give or take. I thought I'd try building a brick SHIP versus a plate/panel design like my Galactica. Here's a link to my Flickr shots.

The structure underneath is simply a technic brick/6x16 plate sandwich, but sideways, with long techinc beams protruding up and down. I used some 2x8 bricks on each side to reinforce lateral stability since there was a fair amount of 'fish swimming' once the box panels started to go on.

WIP Shot

The container boxes, dark and light grey slopes, offset one stud, are pinned to those technic beams above and below (studs up on the top, studs down on the bottom) Greeble panels connect the container boxes up the middle with right angled plates. Once those connect, the structure suddenly becomes much more stable. I didn't think I was going to be able to even move it, but it actually stayed together nicely! The only trick was to make sure the technic axles that connect the fore and aft sections through the two turntables didn't let go.

Thanks for checking it out!

Quoting Stephan Schumann This knockes mine out of my shoes! EPIC! I never saw an more excellent-fitting Trans-Ship, ever. Most I like the allover-surface-structure, and the side-boxes. So Welldone, EL Barto!
Thanks, Stephan! The boxes were a pain to put together, with the dark grey slopes set back a stud from the light grey. Prone to exploding when pressed.

Quoting David Roberts An excellent SHIP. It's amazing how heavy things get when you build them using bricks instead of plates. I like the symmetry of the cargo areas, fore and aft and the exposed Technic beams in the rotating section.
Although it's still mostly hollow, the weight kept adding up, causing the frame to creek. But it's flexible enough to not explode, surprisingly. I wasn't even sure I'd be able to move it, let alone up a flight of stairs. But it did! Thanks, Chief!

Ha ha, yes, certainly some potential there for a new ship in the fleet! The other question is where to put it, physically? It doesn't fit into any of my shelves! And for some reason my wife doesn't want it on permanent display on the dining room table. Oh well... Thanks, Chief!

Quoting Topsy Creatori Wow, I can't even tell it's made of LEGO parts! And, it's chunky shape and spinning pods made me sing... It's a hunka, chunka, churning dove! Anyhoo, cool build and great choice of background for that 1st pic! :)

Quoting Tim C Excellent work, Bart. I love the ribbed look along the sides. Makes the beast look heavily reinforced. I can't get over how clean the lines are. This is one of those special spaceships that looks like it came straight off of a film, and not out of LEGO bins. You've definitely raised the bar on SHIPtember, sir. Best of luck.
Thanks for the great comment, Tim! The ribbed look was borrowed from a Galactica design concept I've considered. I was also quite pleased with the lighting I captured through the dining room window. Fall in Vermont!
