“I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure…”
About this creation

It was meant as a limited series from Sideshow Collectibles and only 1000 of this was ever created. Since I’m a hardcore fan of the Alien universe and in particular Aliens, it was a no-brainer getting this one.

I’m the proud owner of nr 625!

When I came out of my lego dark age in late 2008, I started thinking of re-creating this piece with lego bricks. Let’s look at the result?

The direct comparison between my diorama and the original reveals a number of things. Firstly, the pillars of each creation are almost identical in scale, with similar designs but still quite different. Secondly, the original Xeno is much larger as you can tell. Making the Xeno black was the only viable choice because of certain limited brick colours.

The Xenomorph itself is quite slim and it sure was a balancing act between looking authentic…and well, not falling apart and fall head first from the pillar! The centerpiece of the head is actually a Bionicle jet engine. The exoskeleton “ribcage” is made from 14 minifig droid arms, 7 on each side held together with rigid 3mm lego hosing.

One thing that turned out crucial was flexibility. The arms, legs and the tail are made with the very usable locking hinge pieces, making the Xeno both slender and very posable. It’s only attached to the pillar by several points of friction. The tail helps balancing the whole body. Making sure it stood firm on the pillar was my biggest concern, and it worked out! Lucky me I guess?

From this angle you see how both legs are positioned on the pillar. I tried my best to replicate the original pose. It was a bit of a gamble, but by wrapping the tail around the pillar I got a near 50-50 balance between the front and back. On the left arm, the blade-like appendix were made with a spiky Bionicle spine. Looks quite vicious, don’t you think?

When designing the back of the Xeno, I tried to keep it as clean as possible, effectively avoiding making it bulky. Lots of trial & error! The inside of the “ribcage” is hollow, and you can see the trans-neon green pieces of the creature. Acid for blood, I hope you remember?

It was somewhat easier making the pillar to my liking. To the left you can see the exposed electronics, burnt to a crisp with acid blood pouring and dripping down the pillar. At the bottom it’s oxidizing the bare metal destroying the inside and maybe even cutting the power? And YES the hands are made with Sai ninja knives!

From the other side you get the idea of how the the tail wraps around the pillar. I missed the black-yellow warning striped floor on the original diorama so I thought it was a nice touch. The chrome exhaust pipes were another touch to make it look more realistic.

I included even more acid damage on the back, making it look really gritty and nasty. I really like the trans-neon green pieces! It feels so…well…alien, if you know what I mean? ;)

The final promotion picture concludes this presentation!

very nice xenomorph, looks a little clunky... sorta robotic, y'know? maybe not using those technic pieces would help.
