… And into this Tower he poured his cruelty, his malice…
Then at last his gaze was held: wall upon wall,
battlement upon battlement, black, immeasurably strong,
mountain of iron, gate of steel,
tower of adamant, he saw it:
Barad-dûr, Fortress of Sauron.
All hope left him.
(from: The Fellowship of the Ring, page 521)
Sam did not know it, but he was looking at Sauron's Road
from Barad-dûr to the Sammath Naur, the Chambers of Fire.
Out from the Dark Tower's huge western gate
it came over a deep abyss by a vast bridge of iron,
and then passing into the plain
it ran for a league between two smoking chasms…
(from: The Return of the King, page 264)
A brief vision he had of swirling cloud,
and in the midst of it towers and battlements, tall as hills,
founded upon a mighty mountain-throne above immeasurable pits;
great courts and dungeons, eyeless prisons sheer as cliffs,
and gaping gates of steel and adamant:
and then all passed.
(from: The Return of the King, page 270-1)
Far off the shadows of Sauron hung;
but torn by some gust of wind out of the world,
or else moved by some great disquiet within,
the mantling clouds swirled, and for a moment drew aside;
and then he saw, rising black,
blacker and darker than the vast shades amid which it stood,
the cruel pinnacles and iron crown
of the topmost tower of Barad-dûr.
(from: The Return of the King, page 264-5)
Saruman: "The world is changing.
Who now has the strength to stand
against the armies of Isengard and Mordor?
To stand against the might of Sauron and Saruman…
… and the union of the two towers?
Together, my Lord Sauron
we shall rule this Middle-earth!"
(It's nearly the same perspective like in the movie)
And into this Tower he poured his cruelty, his malice…
and his will to dominate all life…
Some additionel pictures, which might be interesting - the first four are edited by a friend of mine (Thank you!!!) and have those menacing style from the films - I love them!!!
Close-up view on "The Eye of Sauron"!
The not so interesting back panel of it.
And last but not least a size comparison with me - I'm about 1,86m tall - so the tower has 1.75 and contains 50.000+ pieces!!!
Fourth Age Commentary:
Well, here we are, this is just one piece among 15 for the collaboration on BW (I'll upload a extra post for it tomorrow) - maybe the one or another have heard or seen it, I built it within two days...
... on BW, the upper tower was completely destroyed from shipping it from Germany to the US - I'm glad, I was able to reconstruct it! It took me all the time from thursday and friday (till 2.30 AM) to reconstruct and at some point I was in temptation to give up, but with the moral support - not to mention the liquid one - of my friends, I got it done :-)
The pictures are edited by my good friend Orion Pax - Thank you so much, it wouldn't look that good without you!!!
The quotes are out of - guess what?! - LotR, but I got the inspiration for it from this site:
(Those guys are building great LotR models!)
Aside from this BD got a few other names: Barad-badass (by Mark Kelso) and Barad-dead (by Anthony Dunne) after shipping-reassembling-tearing down - HEHE
Guys, it was soooo awesome, just simply AWESOME with you! Thanks for this great experience!!!
Wow Kevin, das Teil hat soviele Steine wie ich in meiner gesamten Sammlung habe. Wahnsinn, ich bin echt beeindruckt von der Größe und der atemberaubenden Detailfülle. Wow, wow und wow!! Absolut Klasse! :)
THE most AMAZING moc EVER! THis is the best LOTR moc I have ever seen! The tower is significantly specific! Your rock work is spectacular! This is one of the biggest mocs ever! Keep up the MOST AMAZING, SPECTACULAR WORK!
All other LotR mocs fade away and look pathetic compared to this masterpiece! Wow I don't think I could stare long enough at this page. You have mastered every detail. The tower is huge. the architecture is brilliant, and it is so accurate! I cannot believe any one person could really build something this good! You are a master of the lego brick. Congratulations!
THIS IS EPIC! I love the snot rock detail and the evil effect that it gives! I also really like the amazing detail on the sides of the tallest tower and the eye of sauron looks very saurony. This is a work of art. How long did it take you to make? Simply Amazing!
Hey Kevin, when I saw this I dropped my gaze, I knew my Model was no longer competitive for the best castle category... This is an absolutely phenomenal build man. I would love this to sit in the corner of my living room - this is art! A huge well done to you, and a great example of perseverance paying off! ~Thoy
Totally amazing. Love the inventive parts usage, like the clips for the unfriendly gothic railing on the bridges. This must have consumed your life. Go play outside for a bit! Congrats on an epic build.
Comment 100: This is a fantastic piece of work. The base for starters is reaching for every angle "out there", masterly built and sparkling with detail. The hooks, metallic thorns and spikes that make this tower so characteristic are consistently accentuated along the climb to the top, but not overdone neither out of scale. Everything is just perfect: from the rock work, the SNOT techniques, the variety of dark colours and the sculpting of curves. This is a Lego feast for the eyes as we seldom see on the pages, yet regulary on your account Kevin. Thank you for making it happen.
Wow! This building is amazing! I love the attention to detail you put in so many places. Could spend hours just studying it, and trying to learn from your skills! I don't know much German, but its sehr schoen! =)
Kevin you simply nailed the look of BD! Brilliant work, wish I could have seen it in person, but I have a reputation and I am not sure hanging out with you nerds would have helped.....HAHAHAHAHAHA, nice pad by the way
When I saw those boxes of this at BW I wanted to cry (as I am sure you probably did). Never in my wildest dreams did I think you would be able to rebuild 50000 pieces of black Lego bricks in two days but you are the MAN! This event will go down in history and be talked about at every BW for years to come. Congrats on the Judges Choice award and on a superior build.
You really can't get the full effect of this MOC unless you see it in person. The level of detail and the innovative building techniques to capture the shape are simply amazing. This was by far my favorite MOC at BW2011. Great work Kevin and congrats again on the "Judges Award".
This is truly impressive - not only the architecture of the original tower, but how you've recreated it so accurately; it's truly something to behold !
I'm not really sure what more I could say, except that this is awesome in every way :)
I honestly don't know which one of these is better, your LOTR creation, Kevin J. (which is amazing), or the Venator that Iomede designed (which is also amazing). Talk about six of one and a half dozen of the other! I'm sure that the both of you are most certainly getting MOCOTD and MOCOTM nods and maybe MOCOTY nominations, too.
Glad you were able to resurrect this - after Chris mailed us the photo's of how the box looked on arrival then we thought the alligator postman had done for it! A simply great creation. Impressive scale, lovely sculpting, neat details. Super job Kevin, and glad to see you enjoyed BW - Hope Heath paid for the Jamesons!
this is one big detailed moc, fantastic that you made it so detailed, specialy when you think at its size, and it did only take you two days ??? it would take me 2 years. great super brilliantly job, keep it up
Herst Kevin, iß was gscheits! Was hast denn Du für dürre Haxln. :) Aber bumm, ein Wahnsinn, unglaublich genial geworder! Und das hast mit genommen nach Amerika? Das würd sich auch gut bei der Modellbaumesse in Wien machen. :)
Whoa! That's huge! Amazing job! Brilliantly done! I'm astounded it took you so little time to build! Something like that would take me years!!! Well, I'd never get it done, I haven't got the skills but... blimy! Amazing stuff.
This was definitely one of the best builds of BW '11. You don't give yourself enough credit though brother, and forget to mention that you won Judge's choice award for this and your clock!!!! Your contribution was amazing, and without your build I don't think we would have come close! Cheers brother! Onto the next collaboration! ;)
I saw this in person at Brickworld, and thought it was totally amazing! It's so good, I don't think pictures can do it justice.

That's pretty epic, man. You should build it in LDD and then blow it up like it did in ROTK.

Amazing Kevin! The long wait did not dissapoint. You've brought every bit of your shipbuilding prowess to bear on Tolkien's classic. There is way to much to comment on so I'll probably draw some boxes on Flickr and do it there. Epic is not a big enough word to describe your work here. I'm in awe. Prost!
HOLY cow!! that's incredible, the details are amazing and all of the little pieces you included (i know that's a vague statement but whatever) are fun to look at. I'm glad you included yourself for scale so I could see how big it is. great job!!
Although most of you won't understand the reference, but...MANAMANA DO-DO-DA-DO-DO! Amazing MOC, filled with all kinds of details! BTW, is it mini figure-scale? ---For those interested what that gibberish is, search "mouth of sauron sings manamana" on Youtube and click the first link :)---
This one truly must been seen in person to appreciate it fully. The thought and ingenuity you put into the creation is wonderful. I really enjoyed the textures you created on the body of the tower, the way you managed beautiful curves while still keeping the menacing demeanor, and the angled repeating panels toward the top. You deserve every bit of praise this creation has and will get. Thank you for sharing and it was an honor to stand next to this.
I'm not sure what's more stunning to me, the initial creation, or your ability to re-assemble practically every single piece in just two days. Pics have started rolling in from our colab, and this was pure GENIUS!!! Brickworld will never be the same!
