Built out of desperation, it became the most successful of the Kuat Systems Engineering combat-models.
About this creation
Built: June, 2006
The Aegis-class gunship, (pronounced "ee-jiss"), was a powerful starship commissioned and used in combat by Kuat Systems Engineering (KSE) in the Post-Imperial era.
While the remaining Imperial warlords continued to squabble over the remnants of the Empire, and the New Republic struggled to reign in a fearful and war-torn galaxy, a new threat was beginning to emerge from the depths of space. This threat came from beyond the borders of the known galaxy, and they called themselves the Yuuzhan Vong.
This new threat caught the New Republic unawares, and the panicked government leaders reeled with the sudden crisis.
As the denizens of the galaxy rushed to take up arms against the invaders, Kuat Systems Engineering found themselves on the cutting-edge of technology. With planetary governments and private militias scrambling to protect themselves, prominent starship and weaponry manufacturers struggled to keep up with the demand, including KSE.
Kuat Systems Engineering received a desperate commission from the leaders of Corellia for a dependable gunship to bolster their defensive fleet. Thus, the Aegis was born. However, shortly before the first wave of gunships was completed and awaiting transport to Corellia, a Yuuzhan Vong attack crippled the KSE shipyards.
Left with only a handful of the new vessels, and now fully aware of the threat they faced, KSE terminated their contract and assimilated their new creation into their own fleets. KSE, a largely family-owned corporation, felt their own needs were greater than those of their clients.
Though their treachery seriously blackened their reputation in the years to come, Kuat Systems Engineering became quite capable of countering further Yuuzhan Vong attacks, should they stray too close to their world.
The vessel itself is quite well-armed, and is equipped with two proton-torpedo launchers, two double repeating blaster cannons, and four warhead launchers. Because of this, much of the ship's weight was attributed to its massive payload of explosives. The tips of its stubby wings contain additional magazines of torpedoes, and are the most heavily shielded area of the vessel.
Though relatively sluggish in space combat, the Aegis' heavy shielding and thick armored hull made it extremely durable. Nearly all of KSE's original complement of the vessel survived their campaigns.
It is unknown just how many of these vessels KSE was able to produce during the Yuuzhan Vong crisis. The ship embodied the creativity and durability evident in KSE's work, which are largely responsible for the ship's glorious performance and success.
I like the ship. It's an odd shape, but well-made. You make excellent use of slopes, especially on the twin fuselage. The little bit of yellow as an accent colour is a really nice touch and well-ballanced. The very tips of the wings seem a little flimbsy, though... could you beef up those movable guns somehow.
