They appear in a poem named "The Mewlips" in Tolkien's book "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil"

Here's a really cool stop-motion video with the poem and the mewlips:

Awesome! There are some other cool places to visit here, too. If you're also interested in buildings: Neuschwanstein(inspiration for the Disney palace), Burg Eltz, Rothenburg(They used this for Harry Potter), Sanssouci, Burg Hohenzollern, and of course Kölner Dom and Brandenburger Tor to name a few.

All of those look awesome! I just want to take like three months, and visit Germany, Austria, Poland, Switzerland, The Czech Republic, and most of Eastern Europe. I've always loved the climate/culture of that part of the world. Closest I ever got was Denmark. :P

A friend and I actually mapped out a plan for fun once about traveling from where we are in Colorado to Prague for the Battle of the Nations event they held there in June. Found out we could swing it for about 2000 dollars apiece, round trip. :P Maybe a bit cheaper if we found some nice park benches to sleep on.

Sounds great! I still haven't visited most of those countries, so if you still need some people to come with you, I would be there in a second, haha. :D Sometimes I wish I could afford a world trip. Any ideas how expensive that would be? :P

Most of our tourist attractions are in Southern Colorado. Mesa Verde is a must, as well as Royal Gorge. I've also heard that the Great Sand Dunes are spectacular, though I've never been myself.

We don't have a lot in the way of architectural sites, except for a massive amount of ghost towns left over from the gold fever of the late 19th century. Most of our attractions (especially further north,) are natural, such as Longs Peak if you enjoy that sort of thing. Where I live in the extreme Northwest, we don't have any tourist attractions really, just a lot of scenic/outdoors stuff. However, we're only 4 hours away from Moab, Utah, which is mountain biking heaven. :P (Mountain biking is great.)

What's a Zelda group?

Well "Zelda" is a series of video games, started on the super nes I think... They are made by Nintendo and are the best games ever made.... Some of the games include, legend of Zelda majora's mask, legend of Zelda ocarina of time (my personal favorite), legend of Zelda twilight princess, and many others. Just btw Zelda is not the green clothed fairy boy... He's Link. Zelda is the princess of hyrule.

Yes, I recommend playing ocarina of time first, because it's probably the best ( my opinion) project 64 is a really good emulator for Nintendo 64 games! If you get that, get banjo kazzoie too, really fun, kind of weird though :)

Yes, everyone in the group is allowed to vote for admins and mods. Actually our MOD elections are every 3 months. Then 3 mods will be chosen to replace 3 of our old ones, but the 3 old ones will also be listed as candidates, so that they can get a chance to continue their job. Then 3 months later the other 3 mods will be replaced (or elected again) and so on. The list of candidates would consist of the 5 people with the most merits + often some other very active people. (Merits are this group's official activity reward system. We used to update it every week, but because of time reasons I couldn't keep track of it and the regulary MOD elections. Thus for the upcoming election we will just choose the people who have been most active during a longer time period now. I think you have good chances to become a mod candidate btw. ;))

Simon moved there last year. He lived near me in Colorado before that. Who do you think showed him MOCpages?

Yes, I already created my schedule for this semester (it will begin in October, and Friday seems to be the best day to meet as far as it looks now.) Maybe we should chat about some more details on skype soon. ;)

I'd love to. I don;t have dates yet, but I'm going to be putting everything together next week, so in just a little bit I should have specifics ready to let you know.

So Michael, would you be available on the weekend of the 14th, 15th, and 16th?

I'm thinking that will be the best weekend to come over there. I have two other friends I'm trying to come see and that weekend works for them.

Hi big people, elves, wargs, dwarves, goblins, black riders, hobbits and other good people of middle earth.

I am starting to get very interested in middle earth, and will be making many middle earth Mocs in the future.

Also, is making a middle earth Lego sig fig charecotr a more Childress thing to do?

Yes, we still do MOCTW. But we didn't get any new entries. And also I din't have as much time as I used to have to update everything regulary (it's not only MOC of the Week, but also MOC of the Month, Member of the Month, List of Honor, Merits/Demerits and the regular Mod election dates, that haven't been updated for quite a while. That's just too much work for one person, so we should really try to hold another mod election, soon.

Sounds great!

I personally don't think that a sig fig is a childish thing to do. It can help to give a random anonyme person on MOCpages more of an identity, because with a sig fig you somehow transform yourself into a lego minifig which shows that you are a real person who loves lego, not just a faceless account.

You remember correctly indeed. I feel ya about the LEGOs heh. So far so good, I'm from the countryside so I wasn't looking forward to living in the city. But Boston is clean (for a city) and spacious and green so I'm ok with it so far. Most time is spent in class anyway and I'm living in the dorms so it's not that big a deal but yeah. So far so good. I haven't been here long though, we'll see how it unfolds as the months go by. :)

It is like any other competition. But, all LOTR/Hobbit stuff, MELO is short for Middle Earth Lego Olympics, it is like the Mocolympics or the Tourney... But with all Tolkien stuff. I have been bugging Michael about this stuff constantly, so if I drop out of the Tourney by having a no-show, it is because I am competing in MELO, I probably am going to be able to complete both at once...

I have been bugging Michael about this stuff constantly, so if I drop out of the Tourney by having a no-show, it is because I am competing in MELO, I probably am going to be able to complete both at once...

That's awesome! Maybe I'll start bugging him about it too :P

Everyone says it is fun... So, I am gonna try both... It is just the same speed I am building now for CCC... 6 days a build...

Well, go for it. I would be cautious though, cause even one contest last year killed me. (I had five all nighters during the tourney) If you think you can do it, go for it though!

I am still slightly cautious, I am gonna have to drop the Tourney if something like a time crunch happens... Although, when I have an idea, I can normally get it done pretty quickly... It is normally what to build is what I struggle with. :)

Anyone ever heard of or played the LOTR the card game? It's a cooperative
game where the players work together to defeat a pre-built enemy deck. It's one of my favorite games!

That one looked interesting to me, though it was kind of spendy last I looked (a few years ago) and I dought I could get my family to play it with me (they not being into LOTR and all). I understand you can play it alone but it's not as much fun.

Yes, it can be played alone, but it is challenging! The base set is $30, and expansions range from $15-$30. That's an average price for that type of game. If you have friends who are into LOTR nearby, you could play it with them. I highly recommend you play it!

I remember there being a LOTR trading card game of sorts way back when but it was discontinued. Is it a recent thing?

Great contest idea! I watched the new prequel movie of The Thing two weeks ago. I haven't watched the 1982 version yet though. Which one is better?

Looks nice! I like the drawings! There is also an older more movie-based card game as far as I know. Have you heard of it? And if yes, which one is better/bigger?

No, I hadn't heard of the other one. The only trading card game I play is called Magic: The Gathering. That one's awesome!

You can find a ton of info about both LOTR games here:

I'm not sure if I will have the time to participate (I have a lot of University stuff and MELO planning to do), but I will definitely follow the contest.

Sweet! Can't wait to see it! I might do my first 2000 vig sometime... If I have extra time... :P I am competing in a competition on Classic-Castle, called Colossal Castle Contest, and that has kept me busy, I get to actually slow down my building for the Tourney... Not sure that happens very often... :P

No, the Tolkien estate still owns the rights to the Silmarillion and they didn't even like what Jackson did with LOTR...

Yeah, maybe in a few decades when people who grew up with the LOTR movies will be the head of the Tolkien estate.

I did hear that James McAvoy (the guy who played Mr Tumnus in Narnia) wanted to be young Gandalf, which is kinda messed up, cause Gandalf wasn't young in the Silmarillion... plus to be honest, when I read it, it was a tad boring... just me though.

Unlikely. Peter Jackson said he was done with big Hollywood franchises.
