Close-quarters Infantry Weapons (Organized by Rank):

Name: Combat Knife
Note: This is completely dependent on the individual character; can be basically any type of knife. These are usually used for melee and stealth, dual-wielding with a sidearm is common. In desperate situations, these can be thrown.
Required Rank: Ground Force Recruit

Name: Sword
Note: Like the combat knife, basically any type of sword can be used to fill this weapon slot. Swords are usually used in melee combat when ammunition runs low.
Required Rank: Ground Force Corporal

Name: Ax
Note: As seen above, the weapon used in this slot varies dramatically from character to character. These weapons are used like swords in most cases but can also be thrown in extreme situations.

I'd say that it is similar to the M16 or the M4. With all of the customization options, you can pretty much improvise with any modern battle rifle.

Personally I think letting people choose one from a couple of primary weapons for each rank. For example for recruit you could have a recruit level sniper, a recruit level shotgun, and a recruit level assault rifle, perhaps expanding the variety as you go up

That's a tough decision. Having two primaries isn't usual, and you would kind of be cheating the system be automatically getting an auto rifle and a precision rifle. What you (and other members) can do is unlock a weapon and then alternate between using multiple weapons. This means that in a single mission, you cannot use two primaries. However, you can use one weapon in one mission and another in a different mission.
