If you are liking Rowntree's MOCs, something's up. General Kingdom and I are set to wipe out General Harvey. You were suppose to strike F4. Now why would you up your enemy's MILPO? There's a hidden plan right there.

If I did not attack you, you probably spare Rowntree and both of you will come after me.

I suppose you need to come out clean then. What's the diabolical plan, boss? :)

Come clean I will. In fact I think I'll nail my colors to the wall, just to give you insight into the genius strategic general's mind... er, I mean the loser's mind :) .

Touch base on flickr and you'll see I was going to attack F4 this turn, and I was gonna take it too, although I had offered plenty of other options to General Rowntree... and he chose this one.

I reached out to General Rowntree in turn 4 when I knew I was in danger because my allies... that's you, had offered to leave me to be slain in F1. Well, all fair, he talked me up, didn't make any promises, and did just what I knew he would do in spite of my embassy. Well, next turn I went on with you to smash him, but then I saw he could attack me again, since apparently I misunderstood the island rules.

Now, I knew to conquer F I needed a faithful ally. If I chose you, you might destroy me after we were the only two left... and I knew you might back-stab me with Kingdomview bricks.

I could also have chosen Kingdom, but honestly I wasn't willing to, at this point.

So instead I went for General Rowntree. I thought he would see the advantage of an alliance with me, the chance it gave him, the option I had of crushing him instead... well, to be honest, I was scared of him posting another amazing build, which he didn't do, and I was afraid of your growing power. Then I heard from him that he wasn't going to post that build, and I saw I had more than enough to crush him, in fact I could crush him in twelve different ways... but I had already spoken him fair, it would have been very dishonest to at this point decide to just smash him anyways. So, I offered several options to him, and he agreed I would attack F4, but I would wait until he had attacked F5, hopefully with General Harvey. Then, next turn various options to surprise attack you or General Kingdom would have opened up to me, in particular I was gunning to get you both to attack first, you getting F9 and Kingdom Taking General Rowntree in F5 (he would expect me to help him by attacking F1... but I wouldn't).

I made this plan because I knew I would be gone all day today, and next week too. This way, it shouldn't matter, as attacking late was part of the plan.. but it was a plan gone wrong. Enjoy your laugh, General Rowntree!

I just wonder if at any point you were grokking me... I was gonna be your most faithful ally! I had offered you a ton! I seriously think you made a bad decision, and it will come back to haunt you.

Here's what I grok, General Genius: Your arrogance is matched not only by your Balrogian diplomacy skills, but also by your blind ignorance of people like General Shifu figuring out your Goldbergian machinations. In addition to his knowing the guy that barely defeated him in the first Decisive Action would see his attack and happily join in to assist. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. If you wish to equate your being soundly defeated with my seizing an opportunity, then continue to call me "unkind" as an opponent. In. A. War. Game. Of which we ALL are your opponents. And if you are still angry at me, then take a number. Because explaining to you where you failed would require a dedicated thread; just grok that your greatest failure here was underestimating your enemies. Aaaaand apparently your allies. And some dude that cleans toilets at a camp on a dirt road in the back country of Arizony.

As far as being haunted by bad decisions, that would only be true if I was afraid of losing. And with this much fun, the only bad decision would be not to play.

General Sweigart lost his momentum in a cyber storm...

That's some faulty analysis, none of Sweigart's 3 opponents this turn had a Cyber Warfare Unit.

General Sweigart lost his momentum the old fashioned way, he took a savage beating by 3 opponents who could never win a straight up attack against him. Even still he managed to defend against one of them because he's that strong.

Also, the battle for F is pretty much decided and I don't see anything cold about the war in D, it seems pretty hot to me.

Actually, your English is better than some in here. :P

First of all, building is rewarding in itself. No one would argue otherwise. Building with a specific direction under a deadline is exhilarating for sure. And if it increases participation, community, and popularity then it is all the better.

However, at its core, this is a game. And it is a war game at that. At its very essence, it is to further engage those finer qualities above with a level of risk. The reward I am referring to is that multi-level engagement of your own self. If you park yourself on the map where there will not be any risk towards you for quite some time, then all those aspects you mentioned lose the intensity of the nostalgia and remembrance. And the fun, ask anyone here about how fast their heart is beating at 12:59 on Friday. Nick's builds were truly masterpieces, still are, but what elevated them was that they were built in a time of war while strategizing attacks, building diplomacy, bolstering allies, compiling numbers, doing maths, and understanding every player on the board is doing the same exact thing. All while trying to slow his heart rate.

Seriously Seaman, your builds have been fast and magnificent. But to what end do they serve in the actual game when you cannot utilize them with an attack? I consider what you do much in the same way that some people restore classic cars to be hauled around to shows. They are cars, and they are meant to be driven.

This is a war game, to play means that you MUST defeat opponents. Sometimes by any means necessary. And although frowned upon, it opens up even more aspects of this game that go even deeper. Those psychological and philosophical arguments that make you look at what you are doing in the bigger picture. Those "dirty tricks" are relative, not cheating or dishonorable. Low maybe, but if the rules do not state specifically to NOT do them...

A game is meant to be played, setting up camp to watch and show that you COULD have been a contender is not playing. No risk, no reward.

One downside to being completely ignored by nearly half of DA on your mocs (No Secret Society Of Heroes have liked my latest MOCs) is that you lose motivation to build well. When DA started up the flags, apcs, Landing crafts and PT boats got likes depending on if they deserved them. Now when your building you know it wont matter if you build the best thing you ever have or not, either way itll be ignored by enemies and liked by allies. And I know it's completely legal, it was just a tad more fun when everyone liked eachothers MOCs depending on the skill of the builder not if they are in battle or not.
(Also note I am not necessarily saying I not guilty of it)

Agreed. That's what I meant earlier.

Part of the problem is the way the Mocpages constituency outside of DA has shrunk. Before, you could make something good and it would be widely recognized outside the game. There's no way to really square that circle but you can stretch it a bit as a few players (Oliver, Zach, Shifu and more) have managed to do.

Or...

You could build amazing mocs that force a wider audience to take notice. MP has been dead for a while, but there was a time when a great build in a category would easily pop 100 likes. Luke did it, I think Shifu did it, Nick did it repeatedly. And all from those not even playing the game or even aware of its existence. And their enemies.

The like/dislike/unlike tactic will always exist. But it exists for everyone. So, now you have to ask yourself what YOU can do diplomatically to change that. Are you nice? Do you thank everyone individually for taking the time to comment? Do you present yourself respectfully for even an enemy to consider that you just may deserve a like regardless? Rattling sabers just makes an annoying noise.

Ah but you see, you must be a good builder to make outstanding mocs. :p I am a pretty poor builder to begin with, and then having to cram the builds this quickly dosent help my quality. A few times I can stumble upon something fairly good (Like the PT boat) but mostof the time its just So-so

No risk, no reward.

Its more of commenting suicide. The Secret Society Of Heroes has made it obvious that there is a standing order that goes along the lines of: "Like all SSOH MOCs, ignore all else" You would have to make something absolutely amazing for them to stray from that. You could possibly pull that off, but most others cant build that amazingly. (Not trying to insult people or anything)

You are only insulting yourself with your futile attitude. Your assumptions are invalid about SSOH as those outside that alliance have received likes from their members. And if you think that standing order justifies your own similar, standing order, then you will never understand the phrase, "no risk, no reward."

I'm pretty sure a couple of us have liked more creations than anyone else in the game, so I hope you guys take notice that there are no standing orders to do anything of the sort! If I or said others have missed some creations it's likely out of sheer lack of time. Too much to keep track of!

I was more of referring to my MOCs specifically, due to me being locked in combat with the CM and one of SSOHs power houses, there has been an obvious deliberate avoidance of my latest mocs by many SSOH members.

(Please note that Im not trying to start a fight or anything, just stating my opinion.)

Don't worry there's no fight :). I'm simply letting you know your suspicion is incorrect. There is no standing order regarding likes in the SSOH. Each member may do as they please and also is free to ask other members to do things which may or may not happen.

Sorry for being somewhat inactive recently! I am currently working two jobs, one of which is in higher education and this time of year is just non-stop with deadlines.

I do try to keep up to date with the general conversation and the twists and turns of this beautiful game though. Iím dropping occasional likes, but also waiting for some magical time where I can check out all of the builds properly.

I also am pleased to have picked up two beautiful shiny Order of Roontree medals. I might start wearing these in day-to-day life :D

Hey guys! Hope you're all going well.

Just wanted to let you know that I'll be taking a bit of a mini-break from DA for the next few days, probably back just before the next AW. The main reason because of this is to sort out some family drama in my life.

To sum it up, I'm fine and nobody's hurt. Just need to take a little while to get it all in order.

Cheers all.

At this point, your much needed strategy is to increase your MILPO, meaning you need to build ASAP MOCs under the MILPO category. ALL are important. Pick one and build! Or as Mr. Rutherford would say, attack!

Rowntree has pretty much said the perfect response already. I will not be removing any likes Iíve given, however I am only going to ďlikeĒ things that I feel are legitimately good. That is what I feel is in keeping with spirit of the game.

You are not ďowedĒ likes. Saying ďitís not my fault I canít build better because no one will like my MocsĒ is simply placing blame on someone else. Getting an attitude and smack talking other players is a sure-fire way to get people to not view you with much sympathy.

Builders like Goldman and Barrett, and Rowntree and Pico and others like them have EARNED their right to sass. Theyíve been building a while and building well; always looking to improve. Iíll be willing bet my entire Lego collection they never said ďno one is liking/commenting on my stuff so I donít have any motivation to improve, wahhhhh....Ē

Build something good and the likes will come. Study other builders and what they do; the techniques and tricks they discovered over the years. Iím not saying you canít be one if the greats, but you need to work on it. Always be improving. Something that works for me is going back in time to something I made a long time ago and rebooting it to find a better method.

I understand you like to smack talk and be sarcastic and thatís all well and good. You have complete freedom to act however you want, but a word of advice? A little humility goes a long way. Complaining thereís a conspiracy against you wonít help your case. The secret society of heroes has much better things to do with their time than just mess with you.

Iíll give you a pro tip for free: if youíre making place holders, youíre doing it wrong. If you post something and say ďIím not really happy with the way this turned out but Iím posting it any way so Give me the likes!Ēyouíre not doing it right. Take pride in what youíre doing. Itís not a race to see who can post first. Make something thatís quality that YOU are happy with and that YOU feel is a good representation of your best efforts.

Place holder?

Placeholder - n. (plas-hol-dur) 1. Something used or included temporarily or as a substitute for something that is not known or must remain generic; that which holds, denotes or reserves a place for something to come later. 2. A sad, embarrassing attempt in the game to garner undeserved MILPO and burn all our retinas; but useful, regardless, when facing imposing attacks by someone with a higher MILPO if the builder can gather enough likes in time.

If, in a future iteration of DA, there were a rule that likes generated from active players are ignored (i.e. only non-player likes are counted), a lot of these shenanigans (placeholders, giving and then withdrawing likes, bartering for likes, etc.) would cease to exist, and the focus (rightfully, in my opinion) would return to the quality of the builds themselves. Sure, there would still be some meta-gaming nonsense, but the vast majority of it would go away.

Unfortunately, given the decline of MOCpages, the non-player pool just isn't large enough to make that practical.
