Hi Keith!

Another tactical question: when a player who occupies only landlocked territories is attacked, do they get naval MILPO added to their defense, or not? Just wondering...

No. A player may NOT use naval weapons defensively if the territory in questions is landlocked.

Regarding the minifigs, Daniel's question illustrates one of the reasons I'm against this rule; there's only so many good combos you can use to match the builds (and only so many fig parts everyone actually owns) and the specs already ask for quite a few figs in every entry. I'd much rather see shark throwing Bob everywhere instead of l@me combos forced by diversity.

Keith and I are discussing. I think it is reasonable to require a different characterm per distinct mini figure required by the specs. I count about 20 current minifigures required. I hope people have more than 20 faces. If not, (speaking as non-DAS), I for one am not terribly disturbed by the concept of a minifigure appearing in different roles in different creations. Actually your shark throwing Bob is really the only thing I'd like to avoid.

Where Keith and I currently disagree on is the presence of extra figs, beyond specs. I think they could appear more than one place. Take Matt's Chewbacca as an example. We will have more to say on this topic soon.

Again, I just want to say, I'm not trying to make a headache, or add to the mountain of rules. If it comes to that, I will use my already-demonstrated DAS powers and react my previous comments. But I think there is some middle ground here that can be communicated clearly.

Hello, friends and residents of (Placeholder Name of Planet). This is a very important message from me, The Chief Magistrate of the World Court.

The content moderation system in this website has a feature where early dislikes or comments without likes will automatically remove a moc from the frontpage. It's a safety feature to allow non-mods to remove inappropriate content, but it can also be used as a nuclear weapon by jerks.

We ran into this issue when the game was just getting started, but some of you have probably forgot, others are new and might not know, so I am repeating it here to get your attention.

In short. If for any reason you don't want to support someone's milpo, just don't touch their mocs. Don't comment on them. Don't downvote them. (Or at least wait a few days until they're officially old news.) If it's new, only give it your love and support and a 4/5 star review.

Using this exploit intentionally, is, of course, Abomination. It is a lousy gimmick and I will push to have you driven from the Earth.

That said, one of our members recently had their very nice boat prematurely kicked from frontpage, in what I'm sure was just a misunderstanding, and I encourage you all the take a moment and consider giving it some love to make up for this unfortunate turn.

You really think a rule is necessary to stop this from happening? It won't. You'd need a rule to force this to happen, not one to avoid it.

This simply doesn't need to be a rule, it should be a simple nudge towards common sense, that's all. Don't make it another go/no go, don't enforce it by asking specific combos that cause limitations, act only if someone is absurd with a warning - like having the council members the same as every random soldier. But gunners? Drivers? Who cares about those guys? There's no reason why they should be unique. Even sets have multiples of those guys in the same box. :))

I gotta agree with Andrei on this one. Even though i do not have the parts for a uniform nation, if i had the parts I definitely would want to. But i am pretty low on mini figures so it would be nice if i could reuse some. Please note i am not engaging in an argument or anything, i said my piece and I probably wont say anything else on this subject.

I regret to inform you that there will be a slight delay in the new category.

Sorry!

We had a really great SPEC for a micro capital ship set up and ready to go. (The sort Seaman apparently just makes as set-dressing.) Unfortunately, maybe fortunately, actually, Kieth had a moment of clarity, and after a serious talk and some whining on my part it became apparent that adding another naval unit would ruin the game.

Because of this, I am working on a new Spec, due no later than the end of the next AW, though I do intend to have it submitted to you, and the good peoples of Too Many Islands Sphere, within the next day or two.

I think the new category should not change the balance of power in the game. Maybe we should introduce it just for fun.

I thought that might pique your interest.

For the curious, and those that have free time on their island fortresses. Here's what might have been:

***Not an official spec, don't build this, add it to the group, ir expect milpo in any way***

Capital Ship:

"These characteristics define a capital ship: if the capital ships are beaten, the navy is beaten. But if the rest of the navy is beaten, the capital ships can still operate."
-William S. Lind, "America Can Win"

Capital ships are the heart of any navy. They are the largest, most heavily armed ships, and they exist to exert control over vast areas of ocean. Their primary opponent is other capital ships, and their unopposed presence wreaks havoc on enemies far inland.

Your capital ship must comply with the following four SPECs.

1) Your Capital Ship will be built nanoscale, not to exceed 20 studs long and 10 studs wide, and no greater than 5 bricks tall. It must be in water, although how you represent that is up to you (brick not required).

2) Your Capital Ship must accompanied by a support vessel not to exceed 10 studs in length and 5 studs wide, and no greater than 3 bricks tall. It must be shown in a photograph with your Capital Ship.

3) You must clearly state whether your Capital Ship is a Battleship or Aircraft Carrier.
3a. If it is an Aircraft Carrier, it must have a flight deck at least two studs wide that runs the entire length of the hull. You must include a picture with a tiny plane on the deck.
3b. If it is a Battleship, it must have two forward facing gun batteries, and one rear facing gun battery. You must include a picture with at least one battery firing.

These are minimum specs, and you can have guns on your Carrier or a flight deck on your Battleship. However, you MUST choose one for the purpose of your write-up, and fully comply with its spec.

4) You must name your Capital Ship and compose a 100 word minimum backstory, epic poem, or sea-shanty in honor of the ship or its namesake.

***Not an official spec, do not submit this for evaluation, add it to the group, or think it will help.***

Have fun, Seaman!

About the whole minifig thing which I kind of brought up, I would be fine with either ruling. I wanted my driver to be the same as one of my leaders for 'story' and because he was cool, but I could easily change him a little or just make a new fig. Thing is though, no matter what the rule is, though I'd love to have an army of figs I just couldn't do that, and would be reusing parts if not combos whatever the rules, probably. So make the rules whatever you like, I don't think they are too hard or grievous even if I have to make each fig completely different, so it's an easy rule if not a necessary one (I was never wanting to take the easy way out and was going to do a different gunner anyways, and the people who will take the easy way out could even with the rule do far worse than reusing minfigs by just taking them from sets).

Capital Ship:

[lengthy SPEC deleted]

Have fun, Seaman!

Frankly, while I am a Lego shipbuilder at heart, and I like the idea of a capital ship category, I'm glad this spec didn't see the light of day.

For the carrier, it is somewhat of a stretch to require an aircraft on the deck when the entire length of the thing can be no more than 20 studs. Given the proportions of carriers and carrier-based aircraft from WWII to the present, the only reasonable representation of an aircraft would be some 1x1 plate/tile part.

For the battleship, dictating the gun configuration is too restrictive. Some WWII battleships had 2 turrets forward and 2 aft. Some had 3 forward and none aft. Modern "battleships" (like a Soviet Kirov class) might only have one relatively small turret and 100+ VLS cells and/or missile rail launchers. Capital ships of sailing era (1st-rate ships of the line) might have 100+ cannons.

Yes, I know, that I am trying to impose real-world biases on specifications for a somewhat whimsical building challenge, but it would be nice if the specs at least didn't preclude realistic builds.

An idea if we were doing Jaegers:
They dont contribute to any kind of MILPO. Their attack power only comes into play when attacking a Kaiju (however those things work) Half of the Jaegers likes also count towards DIPLO (because I mean, wouldnt they have a bit more power having a huge mech?) so a 40 like Jaeger contributes 20 DIPLO and 40 MILPO (incase of an odd number round down?)

Well, this category also relies heavily on the apc size and how you can build around it; mine was too big to be able to have some fun with the it and do anything other than a boring standard boat.

Well, this category also relies heavily on the apc size and how you can build around it; mine was too big to be able to have some fun with the it and do anything other than a boring standard boat.

Looking forward to see what Nick does here, although one thing's for sure, he won't lack the parts. :D

True, that! Still thinking about what to do with them.

Frankly, while I am a Lego shipbuilder at heart and I like the idea of a capital ship category, I'm glad that this spec didn't see the light of day. It is too restrictive.

In the case of the carrier, limiting the length to 20 studs AND requiring that there be an aircraft on the deck is incongruous. Given the proportions of carriers and carrier-based aircraft, for any period from pre-WWII to the present, the only way to reasonably represent an aircraft would be with a single 1x1 plate/tile part.

In the case of the battleship, dictating the gun configuration is too limiting. Some WWII battleships had 2 turrets forward and 2 aft. Some had 3 turrets forward and none aft. Modern "battleships," like the Soviet Kirov class, might have only 1 relatively small main gun turret, along with 100+ VLS cells, armored box launchers, or rail launchers. In the days of sail, a "battleship" (1st-rate ship of the line) might have 100+ cannons.

I realize that I am imposing real-world sensibilities on a somewhat whimsical building challenge, but I would rather see the spec at least allow for realistic possibilities.

Thanks Mark! That's some valuable feedback. Designing these things is trickier than I thought it would be. You have to balance being strict enough to encourage technical and creative compliance and being loose enough to allow builders to surprise you. I can see now how the battleship might be a creative dead end. Maybe just requiring one or two batteries, placed wherever, would have been better.

I do have to disagree about the plane, not that you're wrong, but that the purpose was to get add a tehnical and planning element to what would otherwise just be paving a boat. I'm willing to go a bit soft on scale to get there.

For anyone that was curious, I built my battleship anyway, as Seaman alluded to:

Make another castle to carry your castle. Maybe put moats inside and outside the walls. Would work with the theme, as it wasn't unheard of to have another smaller wall a bit out as a first line of defense/slow down retreating enemies...

If I may be so bold, Chief Magistrate, may I make a suggestion?

If the idea was to provide a category that is relatively small in size and small in piece count, what if the category was a recon vehicle or light attack ground unit? The real-world counter parts being something like a Jeep or Humvee, or a technical. It would be minifig-scale, so not very big, and would only need to hold 2-3 figs. Specs could be simple: 4-6 wheels, spare optional. One offensive weapon with a gunner and a driver.

There's one thing you forgot about: building a pattern on the floor of the LLC.
It maybe a huge flat space, but that doesn't mean it has to be a big monochrome slab.
Even something as simple as a checkerboard design
or stripes would liven it up.

Regarding The World Court, I have to say I have no idea what I could do with those specs. The image I'm getting is Versailles built on top of Borobudur with some rocket turrets on top, some souvenir stands in the front while two fellas are being chased by a herd of rhinos and a sheep. Oh, and there's a big hole in Borobudur for the sake of an imposing entrance. :D

There's plenty of things I don't want to do, many many things really, but build? You know that's not one of them. Yet, I won't do it just to tick the box if I can't come up an idea I actually want to do, unless it's a category as relevant as the llc.

The need of an animal is what throws me off. But right now I'm just more interested in MILPO, and since I have to build a microscale capital building already a Courthouse is not on my list of things to build. On the other hand my LLC is done and then hopefully I can get the Leadership built and be ready for another CAT or challenge next week!

I can't guarantee this list is exhaustive or even correct. I will not be elaborating any more, so check for errors yourselves. If your name is on this list and you think your ORBAT is perfect... You might be correct. Or you might have an error. I'm not trying to trick anybody. These are just the errors I see, but I'm not perfect either.

Did we just lose the Haunted, too?

The Haunted launched an attack on C9 first, but after wards was attacked by the Singularity and then the USSP (they launched attacks on both of the Haunted-controlled territories). If their MILPO is greater (And my rough estimates indicate they are) then yes, the Haunted will now only "haunt" the map; not possess any territory.

You said that butterflies were mere insects so it would take something of very great strength to squash one, I was just riffing off of that. Nothing personal against you, I assure you. I do not want to engage in mean-spirited talk. If you were insulted in any way, I truly do apologize.

No toxicity here, Generals Gunn and Daniel H. Just a friendly reminder that General Norp is not alone in this war. Thanks! Doing fine, had a nice weekend of camping with the family and came home to a very entertaining and very bloody AW. Great turn! It took MONTHS for the first death? Yeeeesh now I can see why you are enjoying the early aggression even more lol!

In DA1 we had formalized defensive treaty groups that had the unfortunate side-effect of completely gridlocking player-vs-player combat. We had to abolish the treaty-alliances just to get the game moving. For DA2 the aggression came a little faster but there were a lot fewer players than we have now so there were more empty spaces to devour. There was also this unspoken and highly irritating "Friendship is magic" style of play that saw players go out of there way not to attack one another until the very end, and even then it was only half-hearted in some cases.

Even though the map changed this year, the number of territories is actually the same, so the map isn't any smaller until you take into account the initially unusable A-territories.

That's your big observation/addition to the conversation? It may be true, but my larger point remains valid, even though DA2 was more aggressive in the early stages than DA1, it was still nothing compared to the first few turns of this game.
