Indeed, twasn't a cinematic marvel by any standards. OG Alien all the way! Ripley was downright awesome to watch, even if I didn't exist when she graced the screen for the first time.

Ripley stands out to me because when I was young I thought “she’s so awesome, I want to be like her when I grow up. She’s not scared of anything!” It never really crossed my mind until I was older that she was female. It’s like her character was so strong you didn’t even think about it. Everybody everywhere could identify with her.

I actually think that it was because she was scared of them and still stood up to that fear is what made her identifiable to everyone and better than any fearless superhero. I still woulda left the cat behind.

Ah Alien, if I had to choose I'd label that my favorite movie of all time.

Funny story, the young'uns don't appreciate it too much nowadays. My ex was watching it with her friends and they laughed the whole way through because it was "boring and cheesy." They described it as "too much character and no horror." At that point I knew we weren't going to last because I was dating a buffoon.

I agree. I was saying she wasn’t scared in like the later part of the second movie. When she becomes hardened and goes after the queen and then fights the queen. Those moments are awesome because she has overcome.

We should just rename this thread the “Ellen Ripley appreciation thread”.

I’m very sorry to hear that, other Zach.

I think the characterization is what makes it great. If you don’t care about or know your characters than there are no stakes. If there are no stakes then we are wasting our time watching them. The first two alien movies (and I would argue the third as well) treated their characters seriously. It made the threat of the Xenomorphs actually scary.

That was in jest. I'm very much so over it and doing well. That was off Patrick Boyles "young'uns don't get nice things" comment. :)

The characterization is what makes it such an exceptional movie. It doesn't have a primary lead until the end, which is what makes it so good. Every death has impact and feels meaningful. It doesn't aimlessly kill off characters, it's deliberate with it's approach. It has some of the strongest characters of any movie ever, and considering almost every one is Alien fodder they didn't have to put that effort in. But the movie is so much better for it.

I personally dislike horror movies as well, with Alien being pretty much the only exception. That's why I only was able to watch it last year.

However, if I may make a recommendation, check out the TV series "All Aussie Adventures" if you want to watch something that's fun, makes you laugh and is plain awesome!

Signs was the one where Mel Gibson's family is harassed by "Aliens" and it turns out all of the coincidences in his life were there to prepare is family to survive the invasion.

And for the haters (not that it was a wonderful movie, anyway), you ever hear the theory that the monsters were actually daemons? There's no real proof they were alien, and the twist makes a little more sense if you view it as divine intervention throughout their life (and the water thing kind of works better, too!).
I haven't heard of that one, but that actually makes quite a bit of sense.

Meh. I'd put Pride of the Yankees and Breaking Away above them. Bad News Bears (original), Major League, Caddyshack, All the Right Moves, and definitely Rollerball (original), would rank higher for me. The best being, of course, Slap Shot. Maybe Victory too.

I generally lean toward historically-based sports movies. Caddyshack and Slap Shot are exceptions, though. I can watch them almost endlessly. Dangerfield was at his absolute best in Caddyshack, and Ted Knight, Bill Murray, and Chevy Chase were pretty good, too.

Major League and Bad News Bears,... meh. Major League pretty much scrapes the bottom of the humor barrel, and Bad News Bears, while good in its day, hasn't aged well. As far as baseball comedy/dramas go, its impossible to put either of those ahead of Bull Durham, or almost any other Ron Shelton film, especially White Men Can't Jump and Tin Cup.

Fact-based high school sports movies seem to strike a chord for me, so Hoosiers, The Final Season, etc. are on my go-to list. All the Right Moves, while fictional, is on my list, too, since I have relatives who grew up in the coal-mining region of PA playing football. It feels pretty accurate based on my relatives' recollections of their playing days.

Bull Durham was definitely good, but it's got 2 issues (one's very subjective) - a young Kevin overacting (in Silverado he's a almost a little Nic Cage) and baseball, a sport that makes me bang my head on the wall.

The problem with that is that then he will have both F14 and F13, which both have resources so then during the third attack window I'll be adjacent to him and I would stand even less chance than now.

If I let him escape, his corner, he has a chance at conquering more Territories, eventually he could become more powerful than me. However If I keep him in his corner, he has no chance at developing into a serious threat.

Close, but I think Kingdomview successfully deflects that attack. Which means he can attack Benjamin back and win, I believe.

It's not how I wanted the 2nd AW to go, but C got more crowded than I expected during the 1st AW, and my only other option was C28, which was risky because it depended on me declaring my attack there first.

It's war. Regimes fall. It's sort of the nature of the beast. You did it brilliantly, Zach was a formidable veteran. Honor the dead, do not mourn them.

However, it is early enough and there are still many white territories. I do not believe we have seen the last of General Lucia. ;)

Before anyone asks what Ive done-

Ive decided that anywhere on E, F, probably C and even D will lead to my downfall very quickly.

So I've decided to take A15 again, to sit for at least 6 weeks (assuming my maths is correct) and to take part in the WC, both to try and have fun ruining people's plans, and to back up allies.

Also, three times King of Antartica has quite a ring to it.

I would resign but I've out too much time into DA3 and there is too much fun left to be had.

Good luck, everyone.

It's ten O'Clock at night on a Sinday, I will almost certainly regret that decision tomorrow.

But still, I wouldn't survive long anywhere (apart from perhaps one territory on D, but I've missed my chance now), and now I still intend to build and take part. Perhaps before my regime change, but since my creations for the nation of NI have been close to the bottom on the "like" department. I'm here to build. If I tried to win I would only be able to build for maybe a fortnight before someone came for me. I would barely make it to the new specs. Also, I still intend to face off agaisnt whoever tries first to take A15. (I'm guessing Zach, but I'm not sure.)

The question is- who will last longest? Myself, Ron, or Seaman?

Well, James, that was called a sarcastically observational insult and it was directed at your intellect seeing as how you seem to be expending so much brain power on decisions that require none that you may not be capable of the ability to stand upright at any given moment. There may be some implied references to vertebral deficiencies in there as well.

Might I recommend that you remain in close proximity to pillows in your third expedition to Antarctica for your own safety, we wouldn't want to see the results of you being concussed further.

I wouldn't really call it a collaboration, it was more of a fly-in. Still fun to build for it, but it was pretty disorganized. I showed up with Hard Six and asked where I should throw it. I never got an answer. The next day I just parked it where it was and walked away.

It did win the award for best walking tank and I got a cool built trophy. Fantastic competition too so I'm really proud of that one.
