Are there rules to this contest other than the ones in the group rules? Or do we just start building?

Just start building! I assume you know that it has to be built with 8 pieces. No more, no less.

Would Iron Man's helmet count as one piece? What about levers?

Levers count as one piece, and Helmets count as one piece.

Wait, so if I have 6 levers, it still counts as one piece?

I think he means the two parts of a lever count as one brick, however if you use 6 levers they will count as six separate pieces/bricks, right? Or will spyders become something doable for this contest!?

I'm sure he ment that the two seperate parts count as one, not that no matter how many you use it'll count as one.

I actually had to check here to see what was allowed because the rules were not really stated anywhere nor very specific, and I'm still not 100%. I didn't know it had to be exactly 8 pieces. Do figures count in the piece count, and if they do, is a whole figure counted as one piece, or is it head, torso, legs, hair, cape, etc. separately? I really think you need more specified rules.

I have my entry built, it's a hover board. I still need to take pictures, but I know that it is seven pieces, plus a technic figure. I look at RK Blast's entry: http://www.moc-pages.com/moc.php/442008 and the minifigure is not included in the final count.

I look at Seaman SPb's entry: http://www.moc-pages.com/moc.php/442001 and the fire isn't included in the final count, but in Oliver Becker's entry: http://www.moc-pages.com/moc.php/442021 he count's the smoke as part of the build. Both are not essential to the model, a dragon does not breath fire constantly, and a canon is not always emitting smoke, but one counts the addition and the other doesn't.

So for the hover board, do I need to add a piece since the focus is really on that, or does the technic figure count as part of the build?

I imagine that over the past three challenges, these rules have been hammered out and are understood by returning competitors, but for someone new like me, I don't know what is allowed. I ran into the same problem with the 15 part vehicle challenges in the past. Wheels counted as one piece, axle and wheel and tire, but there were still entries that blurred the line. There's also what comes in the box together counts business. Levers and turntables I agree with as one piece, but you can also make an argument about planet sets from Star Wars, as the hemispheres came together, but they are used separately in MOCs all the time.

Fire and smoke were considered nonessential things that were just added details, so they did not count, but what about a hot air balloon that needs fire to actually work? The winning entry from 2014 technically had 16 parts in my opinion because the hemispheres as one piece idea is sketchy, and then Sam the first, who ran the contest said the fire didn't count, but I say it should have counted. The rules were not completely hammered out before the entry had been submitted. The next year, things were a lot more clear, but that's the importance of making the rules known before everyone starts submitting entries. The rules always become more clear with each iteration of a challenge or contest and it's because of uncertainties like what I'm asking here with the figure.

Seeing as he is not essential to making a hover board anymore a hover board, the figure can be excluded, but it doesn't really need any additional parts leaving it at seven. I can easily add a piece, but I also feel that because the technic figure is all one piece, he can also easily just count as the eighth piece because it helps bring the model more to life like the smoke to Oliver's canon.

Hey. Thanks for your incredibly long comment! I love feedback, so I'm going to try to answer your questions and concerns as well as I can. :)

Okay. Thanks for telling me about the issue with the rules. I'll type out new ones right after I answer this.

1. All pieces count as A SINGLE piece Unless specified. (Levers, and hinge plates.)

2. Minifigures are broken up like this: Head-Torso (which includes arms and hands)-and legs. IF a competitor would like to use a piece of a minifigure in a MOC, eg.: Leg being used as an engine, that piece MUST be counted. Minifigures CAN be used in a MOC, but it NEEDS to be listed as a prop if the builder desen't want it to count in the final MOC. RK. Blast, this means you must list the minifigure as a PROP ONLY. Legoboy, check out the Third Annual Eight Piece Building Challenge to learn more about props.

Does this make sense? Please let me know if you need anything else.

Yeah that works. Technic figures can be taken apart, but probably at the risk of breaking the pieces. They are actually only sold as just one piece on Bricklink outside of the occasional foot that someone has removed.

I'm not trying to cause problems, but I wanted to tackle these issues before they became debacles like what I had in the 15 piece vehicle challenges. I do want everyone to have as much freedom as possible, but also have the proper guidelines so that there isn't debate in the validity of an entry.

When you say hinge plates...what exactly do you mean? For instance, the 1x2 hinge brick with a 2x2 hinge plate on top? Or two connected 1x2 clip/bars? Confooosion.
