Site Needs An Update
Join to comment
Forgive me for putting this in the help group, but this is the only place this will get noticed and discussed. Even if this topic gets locked, at least my voice will get heard here unlike other areas.

This site hasn't had much activity, and I fear its because of the old website design. Since its near impossible to upload here nowadays, there's no reason for people to stay.

Now I love this site and don't want it to die, but I believe this is the path we are going down. This site needs an update. If you need money, put out a crowdfunding campaign. If you need coders, ask some of the community.

This NEEDS to be done as soon as possible, or this site will die. This isn't a simple guess. I've seen the statistics on other sites before and please, I don't want MOCpages to get canned.

I agree. Though, the uploaded works fine for me.

Yeah, why does it work for some, and not for others?

Yeah, why does it work for some, and not for others?

Because Google Chrome, Safari and Windows Explorer all dropped support for NPAPI plugins, Java included. They didn't notify Java in time to create a chrome extension or something like that. In fact, the three personally want to kill Java because apparently it creates a risk in security.

Whether this is true or merely a ruse to keep user information to themselves, I have no idea. Either way, it's a problem.

Chrome's taken it one step further and is now only allowing Google-approved extensions, so Wondershare Video Converter's out too.

I agree. I believe we need to change some things, to keep the users interested and satisfy their needs/wants.

Wow, a few days and still no reply from the admins? I totally wasn't expecting that...

(That was sarcasm by the way)

That would be nice, but as much as I wish this little chat would do anything unless there's a bigger stir going on I'm going to to out on a limb and say nothing's been decided.

I'd be happy to work on resolving the site's security issues and see if a better uploader can be coded up if Sean's willing to let me access the site's backend. While I'm not a coding superstar, I have done a fair bit of webpage coding and development for my own websites, and a little professionally, and I'd expect I'd be able to have a lot of upgrades ready by winter without changing the look/feel of the site. And at no cost - I love MOCpages and want to see it survive for decades to come. If Sean's not prepared to let others work on the site, I'd happily donate some money every month to support updating the site.

Sean, Mark, Chris - if any of this sounds interesting shoot me an email at lauchlantoal@gmail.com. Really hoping to see MOCpages get back on its feet.

I truly appreciate all of the support for wanting to see this site succeed and progress. That being said, I'm not sure what Sean wants to become of this site. It's been quite a while since he's responded to mine or Mark's emails so we don't know where his thoughts are.

If we are able to get a focus of vision from Sean at some point, we'll surely be in touch and keep you posted.

Thanks!

~Chris.

I've essentially given up on this site for the reasons stated by others, and it really bites for two reasons: 1) I have made some great friends here, and by friends I mean people that I have actually met and broken bread with. 2) I'm not a fan of Flickr and its idea of "community" among Lego fans. It's more of a snark fest and I get enough of that from my friends (see #1).
I severely doubt Sean's going to do jack squat about any of the issues as he stopped caring about the site years ago. It's a shame, but it's time to move on, I think.

Yeah, I'm afraid I have finally hit that point, as well. And that's saying a lot, as I have always considered MOCpages my Lego home...

It reminds me of the neighborhood I grew up in, which was a terrific place with family on both sides of the street, friends up and down the blocks, and favorite stores and restaurants just around the corner. As I got older and moved away, the neighborhood started to decline, and continued on a steady descent until reaching it's current state, which is just short of a slum. It took a great deal of time for me to admit that it was no longer a desirable place to be, because of the fond memories and attachments I had to the area. With a great deal of sadness, I eventually had to admit that my beautiful neighborhood had eroded into disrepair, a state of neglect, and no longer had anything to offer but the memories of something once good in my life. I'll always remember my childhood home with tremendous fondness, but it's no longer remotely the same, and you'll never find me living there again. A lot of similarities with MOCpages.

I still hold out the hopes that some day Sean might be able to - or have the desire to - come in and rejuvenate the old neighborhood. But, it doesn't seem likely at this point.

The Safari (or at least mobile) version has problems:
The uploaders won't work
I can't go back on most pages
It constantly asks me to enter my password

1.
For the simple uploader, upload in batches of 5 (with no main pic) or 4 with main pic.

2.
I presume you mean comments and creations? Well then copy them to Microsoft on your phone, or to notes or just click copy, leave the page, then if the content of your moc dissapears then click "paste"

3. Happens with simply EVERY gadget. I think it's fifteen minutes, or if you clear your history,

I use an- I pad and an I phone. What do you use that play up? What phone?

That's not fair, he PURPUSLY (forgive spelling please) CRASHES the site to FIX IT. and he has a job. And a life. And toenails to clip and Bacon sandwiches to eat, and Lego to make. A lot more then we have!

Honestly the site has been dead for a long time, I'm pretty sure it's last major "hoo-rah" was way back in 2013, since then new people have joined but not nearly enough to make up for it. A lot of the members are fairly young too. To be honest I backed up all my photos a while back because it really feels that sooner or later this site is going down for good. I'd advise the same for most people here too. Really, as outdated as the site is, it's one of the best sites for mocs, or rather was in it's hay day. From what I can gather from this topic it seems like Sean has moved on and is either keeping this up because of obligation or because he can still make something off of it. I've since moved elsewhere but honestly nowhere else has the same sense of a close knit community. It's unfortunate but all good things must come to an end. Honestly flickr is the best current alternative. The sense of community isn't really there but a ton of great mocists are there and it's a pretty simple site to manage.

If they do take it down, I would be on the Lego Galleries.

If this website ever gets updated, I have a feature suggestion, which will be especially helpful if you have a lot of favorite builders:

Every week, MOCpages will email you the best of the latest posts from your favorite builders instead of sending them one at a time. This is similar to how YouTube emails you the latest from your subscriptions.

Perhaps as an option. I, for one, appreciate being notified as soon as a new creation comes, as opposed to later that week. It'd also be annoying having to wait a week to get comments.

Doubt this site is ever gonna get an upgrade, as nice as that'd be.

Buuuuut, since we're on the subject...

It'd be nice if there's a way, that when you're posting a creation, you could select what groups for it to be put in, instead of having to add it to a million groups after posting it. It seriously takes me almost 20 minutes to add new creations to my groups.

As much as a do love the site I don't think it's not worthy of my time anymore seeing that I haven't uploaded in a year. I'ts sad but true. The site is slowly dieing. I don't think that there is any site like it, but If the site owner isn't responding to emails that most likely means that he really doesn't care for MOCpages anymore or has simply moved on. The firetruck community is almost completely dead (just as an example). Just my two cents. I think we all should just say goodbye at this point if the owner hasn't even posted in this topic. We all just have to learn to accept it.

I'm sorry, but I don't think that these comments (what you have said has been said at least ten times in this topic already) are that helpful. Okay, 1-2 are good. But seriously, this kind of comment is more or less the exact same (minutes the fire truck point) as soo many above it. And these comments are having a rather negative effect.

^Sorry about that. Just me ranting, (:P) and not really aimed at you.

But James, if people keep quiet and don't post here, wherelse should they express their views? If people keep quiet, how will the Admins ever know that there are problems with the site and the community here?

I agree with David on this one. This group is probably the last group which people can still voice complaints and inform admins on changes that need to be made (though I'm sure they know it already).

Personally, I'll stick around here until the very end. I started on this site, I'll see it out. But yeah, the site does need to be cleaned up a fair bit.

I hope this site doesn't completely die. Been here since October, 2009 and had a blast with everything that has been going on. It's the place where I can show others me and the crew's imagination of Star Wars stories, and other types of traits that are used here.

I wish there was a way for Sean to pass on the torch to one of the other admins here, but only if Sean is not wanting to be involved with his site. Just an open opinion, but it would help the site grow again I think.
